I have never had it so I dont know what is so discusting about it. From what I can see its a bunch of candied fruit in a loaf which sounds darn good to me...

What sucks?

Any good recipes for fruitcake so I can have a good first impression?

I don't like fruitcake, it's soooooo sweet. Way too sweet for me, and I have to admit I have quite a sweet tooth.

Every year around middle of november for the past 5 years I've made Alton Browns Free Range Fruitcake. It doesn't have any candied fruit, it's all sundried fruit or fresh. Anyways, It's expensive to make, very time consuming because I leave mine in airtight containers for 1 1/2 months and baste with brandy/rum daily. I was gifting it at christmas. Anyways, last year I found out through the grapevine that two of the people I was giving fruitcake to weren't even eating it. They TOLD me they like fruitcake when I asked them so they wouldn't hurt my feelings, and then threw it out! I was livid. So now I don't even make it. It's time consuming and expensive, but I love it. I just can't justify spending the money and time for just myself. Alton browns recipe is awesome though!!!

I agree, it's really expensive when you make a whole bunch of them, and DH and I got superstressed out mailing them (he's the chef, I was the mailing coordinator, there just wasn't enough room in our kitchen for the tubs of fruitcakes/booze and the wrapping and the mailing supplies, etc.) And it just kept getting more and more expensive, it was crazy, and people started making fun of us and our fruitcakes when we worked soooo hard on them, it wasn't worth it to do it again this year.

I think we might try that recipe for ourselves. We did the regular Better Homes and Gardens recipe and they were pretty well boozy by the end of it, you got quite the buzz of just one piece! I them because they're just so festive, and Christmas is my favorite time of year.

holy crap! You can get drunk eating fruitcake? I am so IN! LMAO.

I just want to try it for me. I cant imagine gifting it, with the stupid stigma going on.

Well done, fruitcake is awesome! With real butter, good quality citron and glacee, spice, and liquor. Unfortunately there are a lot of cheaply made, dry, disgusting fruitcakes in the world.

They are really $$ to make yourself. This is my very favorite fruitcake ever, we treat ourselves to some every year(their bourbon fudge is also awesome )
