cross post -2 year old with foreskin infection - need help

My SIL is out of town this weekend and my brother is in charge. Of course everything that can go wrong goes wrong.

My 2 year old nephew was having problems urinating - crying when he went. My brother cracked open the diaper to find swelling.

My brother took him to Urgent Care and the dr on duty went to pull back the foreskin - my brother stopped him - said he was told not to forcibly pull it back. He and the dr did not see eye to eye and my brother and nephew were sent home.

My nephew is still in pain. My brother is frustrated. I told him I'd check here as I'm sure I'd be able to find good advise.

Any tips you can offer are greatly appreciated.

Possible seperation trauma going on.

Crying with peeing and swollen foreskin are signs of seperation trauma .

It can start as early as 2 off and on throughout the years until the boy is fully retractable .

Crying during peeing could be tears under foreskin and that happens from when the foreskin tries to release their normal attachment . As acidy urine goes over those tears it creates a sting reaction also known as urine burn .

Warm baths with epsom salt, try to get the child to pee in warm bath or a warm cup of water . I know it will be tricky since he's 2 yrs !

Somehow peeing in warm water helps urine be less acidy and it soothes the swollen penis .

If it is seperation trauma it should go away within 24-48 hrs if not then there could be something more going on.

Where does your brother live ? Because that urgent care didn't know anything at all and I'm like if he has to go back there again .

Bring the NoCirc Pamphlets on Forcible Retraction is a Big No No .

I will let him know.

He went to urgent care and saw a different doctor than usual. I am SO proud of my brother - as soon as the PA went in my brother stopped him - told him that their usual doctor told him to NEVER ever do that. The PA told my brother he had been a PA for 20 years and he fully disagrees with the regular doctor and that my nephew has phimosis. My brother stood his ground and the dr went off in a huff - googled something and brought back a printout for my brother about retracting the foreskin in a bath. My brother left with a miserable baby and a bit of anger. He looked at the printout later and it turns out it was instructions for after some procedure is done to stretch out the foreskin which is caused by forcibly retracting the foreskin...

He is VERY upset with that PA and is writing an angry letter to the practice. I am SO proud of my brother.

The little one is doing much better today - he had him in the warm bath and I will let him know it could just be separation.

A helpful link http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732 and phimosis can not be diagnosed in a 2 yo :

Puberty has to be well established before that is even an option. Or the child has to have been forcibly retracted enough to cause scare tissue.

Good for your brother! Holding healthcare officials accountable for their inaccurate, harmful advice, and giving them the correct info. will help protect our country's little boys from penile injuries and circumcisions. The ignorant physicain / or PA no doubt has caused numerous penile injuries to intact boys over his 20 yr. career, probably resulting in circumsicions for improper diagnosis of phimosis!

How is your nephew now? That thread I linked to has some helpful advice of helping him heal and how to treat it as well.

I was sorry I missed this earlier b/c I have quite a bit of experience with this one. The burning is just separation as others have said. For my son it was very painful. Some boys just experience more pain than others. Here is a thread I wrote about it:

Have him pee in a cup of water. The pain and swelling will go down in 4-5 days.

My nephew is fine today. The swelling has gone down. He spent a lot of time in a warm bath these last few days (he just turned 2 and is not potty trained so getting him to pee in a cup is a little tricky LOL)

My brother is still upset and I can't say I blame him. They are going to speak to their regular doctor who is fully supportive.

He sends his thanks. This is their first child and they worry a lot
