New help w/ severe yeast diaper rash

Sorry for the long story, but I need to explain some things in order for it to make sense.

My friend is currently cloth diapering her third child w/ all my old diapers (well DD (6)'s diapers). Her daughter is 5 mo old, cloth diapering for the last 3 months. This is my friend's first CD experience and she loves it! I have truly converted her. She has 100% cotton, mostly organic prefolds, w/ bummi wraps, again 6 yrs old, used only on DD.

Her daughter has had a severe diaper rash for a month now, confirmed to be yeast. Nothing seems to relieve it or lessen the rash. For a while, letting her go diaper free was working, but now that it is confirmed yeast, friend is worrying about it spreading to oral thrush and her little one is a scratcher so she is reluctant to continue to do this. She has been using zinc oxide, but it doesn't seem to be working and now my friend says she can smell the build up of the zinc oxide in the dipes. She did strip them recently and she said the smell is lessened.

What else can she do?
Oatmeal baths help, but you can't leave your kid in the bath all day.
My friend's mom suggested actually putting baker's yeast mixed in water on the rash (she swears by it); but this seems weird to my friend and I -- yeast helping yeast?

Could something be building up in the diapers that is causing the rash to continue? She is considering spoises, but is reluctant b/c they aren't breathable and now is considered as to what might be in the spoises. We live very rurally and all-natural spoises aren't accessible.

Thanks is advance.

Make sure to sun the diapers as often as possible. The yeast can live on the diapers if it's not killed. This has dragged out my DS's yeastie rashes before. We have had to use sposies for a few days until it cleared up. If you can bleach the diapers or wash them with Dawn detergent, I think that helps too. We've also been using Grandma El's diaper rash cream, and it's helped a ton! {we use it for DS's eczema too!} It's a little more expensive than regular diaper rash creams, and I haven't found it in any stores, but there are a few online retailers with free shipping that carry it.

How much Dawn detergent and do you strip the diapers after washing them w/ Dawn's?

nak

The sun and hot hot drying should help. I put DS in sposies until it was completely gone earlier this summer. Nystatin cream was the only thing that healed it and i tried aton of natural stuff for weeks.

We battled yeast for a few months,...it did end up graduating to thrush in both me and my daughter. This is how we finally eliminated it...

1. Used peroxide bleach in the wash (1/4-1/2 cup). Peroxide bleach doesn't break down fibers like chlorine bleach will.

2. Applied plain yogurt to the rash at every change, after leaving her bottom to dry out with out a diaper for 5-10 minutes.

3. In our homemade diaper wipe solution (water, teaspoon Dr. Bronner's), we added a few drops of tea tree oil. We continue to use this solution to ensure it doesn't come back.

ETA: Zinc creams don't help yeast rashes, and can actually make them worse.

Your friend should also look into food allergies (because they can sometimes cause yeast like rashes).

I sprayed gentian violet solution on my daughter's bum when she had a yeast rash, and it worked like magic. It did take a while for the purple to wash out of her diapers, but oh well.
