We've been experimenting w/ a bottle for 4 weeks now, (started at 6wks) since I'm going back to work in two weeks and the mr. will be home with DS.
he takes it and drinks it, but doesn't seem to drink all that much. At least, not what I would have guessed he'd need in the hours I'm gone. Today, for instance, I went to play ice hockey, so good time to use a bottle - I was gone from 9 to 12, and in that time the mr. only got DS to take a 1/2 oz, if that. When I got home DS was napping and I went back out to the garden so the mr. could try again (to not waste the milk) and he got him to take 2oz. I didn't nurse him again until 3pm, and the rest of the day *seemed* normal (not nursing a ton, or anything)
would it make sense that one would only need 2.5 ounces in 6 hours? That seems so little to me. I thought it would be more like 3 oz in one feeding, which I do every 2-3 hours, and usually closer to 2 hours. When I pump a boob from full to floppy it can be more like 6-8oz though I have an oversupply still so its not exactly what he's eating (I'm block feeding)
I'm just wondering if we should do a test full-day gone (9-5) to see what happens - or if he'll adjust and start to drink more from the bottle. Its not like he fusses, DH says he really pushes it away and makes it clear he's done. Maybe he just doesn't do that w/ my boob so much? Although lately nursing has been more difficult too, so maybe he's eating less there as well (if he's awake, he nurses in a super distracted way - looking around and delatching too often, so doesn't get much - I've been instead nursing him right when he wakes up to avoid this which I think is working)
he's gaining well - 13.5lbs at 10wks, so no issues there but we only do a bottle every few days. I'm just wondering if I go back to work if we'll see his intake really decline? Just because he's not as into drinking from it, and perhaps is drinking from the boob not out of hunger? He does get a lot extra when he comfort nurses from me since my letdown still happens and even the 5th one or whatnot provides a bunch of milk.
