Made some newborn stash choices...what do the experts think? ;)

So...after a week or two of research and one visit to our regional cloth diaper store I think I have an idea of what I want!

Wildflower Diapers in Scottsdale, AZ is where we will probably purchase these as we live nearby and unless there are some good online deals I would like to support a local business.

DH and I like what we have read about hemp BUT they are a bit expensive so we can't go all out but to begin we were thinking..

1 dozen Babykicks Hemperoo Fleece Prefolds for $79.20 +tax
2 dozen Green Earth Textiles Chinese Prefolds for $32.40 + tax
6 Thirsties Duo Wrap Covers in Size One for $76.50 + tax

So all and all around $200.00 for our beginning CD experience.

What do you all think of this beginner's stash for broke new parents?

sounds like you will have plenty!! and way to save money, too! We have the regular thirsties covers and love them. They seem pretty versatile in sizing anyway, even though we dont have the "duo" kind. Thirsties are by far my favorite covers. I don't know anything about the brands of prefolds you are getting, as the only kind I have are green mountain prefolds. They do their job well, but I discovered Im just not a prefold kinda person (nor is my husband). I dont like having to fold them and they never seem to fit as well as fitted diapers do. After trying just about everything out there, our favorites are thirsties fab fitteds with thirsties covers. (sorry I know you weren't asking..lol) but yeah, not that Im any sort of expert, but I'd say your set!! Dont forget to get a couple snappi's too, those work well for holding the prefolds in place.

ETA: we never ordered nearly as many are you are ordering.. we get by with a lot less. I guess we sacrificed quantity for convenience, by ordering fitteds.

That will definitely get you started. Personally I think hemp isn't all it's cracked up to be because it sometimes (not always, but sometimes) gets stiff and stinky. And the Babykicks prefolds can't be snappied. Also, I dislike Thirsties covers quite extremely, but I seem to be the only one--everyone else loves them, and I've heard the Duo wraps have a different fit. I'm glad you're getting cotton prefolds as well.

3 dozen diapers and 6 covers is an excellent setup, although if you're trifolding the diapers you may run out of covers, but you can always hand wash them.

nak

i would skip the hemp prefolds. i have had a few over the years and never liked them. hemp doublers are good though.

No expert here, because I am getting ready to CD my baby coming in Nov...But I am doing something similar...

I am getting indian unbleached prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers....2-3 dozen in Orange (infant) and another 3 dozen in Yellow (Small)
3 snappies
12 hemp doublers
and 6 thristies duo covers.

Check out Green Mountain Diapers...They seem to make the best cotton prefolds available and their site is extremely informative. You hear nothing but rave reviews on diaperswappers.com and diaperpin.com.

I would skip the hemp prefolds and add another dozen Chinese prefolds instead. As a pp mentioned, the hemp ones can't be snappied and might be bulky as doublers if you wanted to use them that way.

Green Earth are good prefolds.
Unless you dead set on hemp, you will do just as well with the Green Earth Textiles.

I personally found Nikky Covers to be superior/breathable covers to all the brands I used with my three children -- the company has successfully been around since about 1988 and cost about the same price of the newer covers mentioned. Just some food for thought on a long time worthy product.

I used a snappi on mine just fine.
However I do agree stick with the cotton prefolds go for maybe some hemp doublers if you want extra but I just prefered the overall fit of cotton prefolds.
I'll be ordering a duo wrap soon to see how I like it with my first we mostly did bummi SWW and my beloved Nicky cotton wraps. LOVE the Nicky!

Oh my planned stash for a new born/baby
1 dozen each of the orange and yellow edge organic prefolds from GMD
12 new born snuggle up diapers (these run around $5.50 each)
4 true newborn sized covers still deciding exactly which
6-8 small and more expanded newborn smalls like the duo and the airflows mentioned below. I like having plenty of covers honestly one could get away with around 3-4 per size...
the part time package from motherease with 12 MEOS 6 doublers and 3 covers in organic cotton probably.. If not there regular I know they wont fit at first but then it won't be long.

Ifluffedthree, I know I mentioned this before, my aunt diapered her children in prefolds and Nikky covers in the 1980's that she got when they were living part-time in Japan, and loved them. But I looked at them and besides being at the upper end of the price range, they come in seven different sizes, which, if the weight ranges are accurate, my dd would have needed all seven. She needed all four of the Bummis sizes and that was expensive enough. Plus, the Velcro on the Nikkys looks like it might be scratchy--it's so wide. Can you address these potential problems? I never tried a Nikky so I'm going by the picture on the Babyworks web site.

36 dozen for a newborn is great! that will give you enough to wash every 3 days if you are too busy to do it every other day. Makes it that more convenient. You prob won't need your covers at first either, newborns only have so much pee. I didn't use covers for prob a month (maybe a little less). I'd say you are set!
I used BabyKicks PF's when DS was first born, and I am going to use the same ones when #2 shows up (any day now). I love them. I always use snappis, they grip just fine. I also use them on DS as extra stuffing or trifolded in a cover now. The absorbency can't be beat. No stink issues here. The occasional time there has been an odor, I soak them in cold water w/baking soda, then do my regular wash routine. To keep them soft I use Ecover softener, not in every load tho. Sun dry, then toss them in the drier for 10-15 min to fluff up. The cotton PF's I have are ok. I only have like 4, and I use them, but they don't absorb enough for me. I guess I'm the minority here. I stuff a joeybunz in them for boost. It works, but then I think I can always just use a hemp prefold instead of a prefold & an insert. No feedback on the covers, I've never tried Thirsties. I do hear good things about them tho.
Congratualtions on your new addition and I think your stash will work wonderfully
