Getting Out of Debt with DR, Sept 2009 - Page 3

Welcome to all the newbies! It (usually) feels pretty good to finally get a handle on exactly how much you owe, and have a plan for how to tackle it.

I say usually, because this month all I want to do is spend! I almost enrolled DS in preschool, although I had previously decided not to, partly for financial reasons. My iPod got ruined by a leaking sippy cup and I've almost ordered myself a new one multiple times (thankfully my birthday is only 6 weeks away and DH has promised me the new one for that). We really want to stop co-sleeping and have considered buying a $400 Lightning McQueen bed to convince DS to sleep alone. Luckily, I've caught myself in time on all those, but I still really have those itches! Remind me of my goal, please!

You'll be pleased to hear I got most of it done last night. I input all my data, figured out where the problems were and mostly adjusted my Sept budget.
Thanks!

Welcome to bs2 The Hidden Life : Get crackin on that first debt.

smallmama, sounds like the I wants came to visit. We've had them hanging around too. All I can say is stand strong. You joined this thread for a reason, you want to be debt free so get to it. I'd check craigslist for a character bed, I see them on our craigslist quite often.

Friday is payday and I cannot wait! This month I'm doing the no-spend challenge and the home cooked challenge and so far, so GOOD! (I haven't been recording in the no-spend thread...but I haven't spent out of budget yet...I'm just busy!).

I will have to pay a $60 doctor bill for DD that xh is SUPPOSED to pay...but it's in my name and he keeps "forgetting"...if he pays me back, GREAT...if not, my back is covered.

Also, sometime in the next few months or so I should be getting around $2,200 in a law suit settlement...yahoo! That'll go straight in the savings! Just wanted to share! Better finish dinner now.

I hope all you mama's are keeping focused as well

Thanks for the reply mtm! I'm doing ok today... I haven't left the house, so that helps. I am definitely looking out on CL for the bed, but haven't seen the one I want listed at ALL. Just a lot of toddler beds, which I think will be too small for my big guy. OH, I forgot to mention the worst temptation! One of my friends became a Mary Kay consultant and I agreed to go to a recruiting thing just to help her out but told her I had NO interest in pursuing it. Well, while I was there, it sounded pretty good! My brain returned when I left the room, though, and I declined the "opportunity."

Oh darn, smallmama, I missed this yesterday! But thanks for it anyway! Maybe next time.
Thanks for the heads up smallmama! I registered for the give a way as well and am browsing the store since the 9.99 sale is still going on

Each DAY is a separate contest. So if you missed yesterday, you only missed the first contest. Today is a separate one, then tomorrow is a separate one, and so on until the 18th. You have to enter EACH day to be included in that day's contest. Is that clear? He's giving away $999 EACH DAY of those 9 days. The $9.99 sale will also be going on until the 18th, too.

Getting a refund $587 for preschool we canceled for the 3 year old, and sticking it all in the FFEF!!!! Figured I lasted a few weeks without it, probably won't need it, right?

Well things might be changing here. The place we are renting has two roof leaks that are not being fixed. Also Dh is having a hard time not falling asleep at the wheel ( 1 hr 10 min drive) and the roads in the winter to our house are not cleared well SOoo.

We might buy a house. Before you kill me we have rented 2x in 18 months that included 4 people in a one bedroom house with mold...

We are looking right now 20 min closer and the road to work is cleared better in the winter.

I know I haven't posted here in a while, but I'm still here...promise! I've been doing really really well too! For a while i was attacking a bank loan (i'm still on babystep 2) even though I had a credit card with a lower total amount on it (2,000ish) but it was at zero percent so I was doing minimum payments while snowballing at the bank loan. However, next month is when the zero percent was due to end so in the last two months I've been sending all the extra money to the 2,000 credit card and guess what?!

na na na na, na na na na, hey, hey, hey GOODBYE AMERICAN EXPRESS!!!

lol, that's great holly! good for you! I also have one cc at about 2k that I'm trying to bring down. My budget will be a booger bear from now until the end of the year, unfortunately. Well, to me anyway. But I'm working on it!

mtm - Please add me to BS #2

I've been avoiding this thread we moved quickly for what seemed like a great job, until DH's supervisor let him go without reason (and apparently has a long hitory of doing this over and over). We went from BS3 to BS1 But - After a month, he was offered a new job in our hometown, so we've moved home and are sharing expenses with our tenant and camping in our driveway. I've got almost exactly 3k to pay off, but should be able to pay off about 750$ as soon as I'm sure when the first paycheck comes. It pays well and may have some overtime. Also, since its longterm, I am going back to school (cashflowed and if needed, prepaid $$ left from DH's prepaid) in the Spring : I should have my RN at the end of Spring 2012

Now I really need to sit down with the budget and figure out how much extra and plan for the upcoming holidays. Anyone found great (cheap or free) programs for online record keeping? I really want to keep better track of incoming and outgoing expenses
post #56 of 131
Thanks Gals!

It's so motivating to move forward! I really appreciate this thread so much. Several times today I said, "Hey DH wanna see something cool?" and then I opened up our amex account online and showed him the big fat "ZERO" under "current balance"

Now back to my regularly scheduled bank loan snowballingness. LOL. I think i invented a new word...maybe Dave will adopt it for his next book!
still here but haven't made much progress on my debt but haven't made it worse...we did lock our remaining mortgage it at a very low interest rate. Dh's employer is giving him his raise in the form of RRSP's which is great. I have increased my income starting this month as well as dropping some extra expenses. Will be making some decent payments and living frugally to bring the debt number down...
I'm still kickin' around. We're on BS 2, and this will be my first pay cycle (monthly) where I haven't used credit cards to make it through the month (finally!). It's great. It's a longer cycle, so I still have 2 weeks to go, ample gas money set aside, and $20 to play with.

This month has been a big month for car repairs for us, but we've managed to pay cash for them without dipping into the emergency fund. We're chugging along, and hoping to keep our snowball rolling without more falling off to what life throws our way!

Hi there!

Excited to say that I have decided as of today to join this group! I've read the threads once or twice and then quickly forgotten about it. Time to get my head out of the sand and start getting out of debt!

I'm in pre-baby step one now, with hopes of being full on BS1 by late September/early October.

I've started making a list of all the debts I'm aware of, and just ordered copies of my credit reports to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I started a simple budget with Pear Budget (www.pearbudget.com). Seems way off as of now but I plan to track my spending closely over the next 30 days (tracking every receipt) and then hopefully the budget will be more realistic.

I requested Dave's The Total Money Makeover from the library and should have it shortly.

Feeling really positive about this decision and hoping the momentum will stay with me! Thanks for being here to keep me accountable!
Well I'm back for another month, and we are completely still in pre-step 1, but and I stress but DH & I have a better budget system getting set, and really realizing what we need to have budgeted in terms of expenses. FYI we just bought a house last year, so its like trial by fire in terms of figuring this stuff out a bit.

After this budgeting stuff is set and savings accounts set up (like for house stuff, our insurances, etc.), we're trying to get set on "getting current" on supplies/needs. This is tricky, and it feels like I'm spending more than saving - so do I have this backwards?

A question for anyone who is beyond pre-step 1, what does DR mean by "amputate" extras - is it like get rid of or just stop using? Thanks!
