horrible flea allergy dermatitis in dog

Hi there!

My poor, two year old pitbull girl has HORRIBLE flea allergy dermatitis. We have been dealing with these fleas allll summer, but over the past two/three months, it's gotten REALLY bad. She is bleeding from scratching and biting, and bleeding in places she could not have reached. She is missing hair and looks AWFUL. I can not afford the steroids/battery of tests/expensive prescriptions that she needs. She's been to the vet for her shots and all, about three months ago, and it was NOT this bad. I feel like a neglectful, abusive pet owner, but I really don't know what to do. I can't afford hundreds of dollars in vet bills- who really can? And I can not go into debt for vet bills. I don't knw what to do. There is no one who will take her- no one who would take care of her- a shelter would euthanize her, I'm sure of it.

She is absolutely miserable. I have tried bathing her with gentle soaps, or no soap at all, I have tried the E Collar (she just stays frozen to the floor for hours and hours, not eating or drinking), I have tried balm all over her body. She is frontlined. We have done DE all over the house. We vaccume, we shampoo. I am out of options- DH wants to flea bomb and everyone else agrees- I don't want those chemicals in our home!

So obviouslyn I have two issues. My dog, and the fleas.

I can't begin to imagine how uncomfortable she must be. Do you have any budget for helping her? If you have a good relationship with your vet, you might call and talk to a tech and let them know how much you have to spend, see what you can do with that budget. I can understand that you don't want chemicals in your home, but I suspect you also don't want a dog living in agony. Your vet has options and tools (capstar, other topicals) that will do more than the sprays and shampoos. It has been two/three months, so clearly time is not going to solve her problem. You may want to consider contacting the rescue groups in the area to see if they would rehome a dog with her issues, since they are managable.

What about a humane society? Could a rescue help you out with the money?

Is there a payment plan?
