You are correct that there is a lot of variance between UU congregations.

When my dd was 7 her RE curriculum was "Free to Believe", which my church is still using this year for 6-7 year-olds. Here is a very brief description:

Quote:
Free To Believe explores UU principles and sources while nurturing the social, emotional and spiritual lives of children. The curriculum focuses on UU principles, values and beliefs and on life’s “big questions” (about God, death, the creation of life) through hands-on activities, stories, games, songs and discussions.
Overall, I like this curriculum. If the church you are visiting uses it, your son may find that it takes longer than he'd like to get the "big questions" part because IIRC most of the Fall was spent on the principles and sources. I found this to be a positive because it sets the background for a religion where each individual is searching and helped my dd get a sense of spiritual identity - what it means to her to be Unitarian Universalist.

Your local UU church may offer something completely different for kids that age, but it will almost certainly offer some kind of formal RE that includes encouraging and guiding kids in thinking about and exploring their own spirituality.

I'm glad you are going to visit. I hope you have a great experience. Please let us know how it goes!

I got hear a sermon on Sunday!

My 2 year old DD went into toddler/nursery care and did not need me until the service was closing and we were singing the final hymn. There is hope. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me that this was not a fluke and she will repeat.

So, we went to the UU church on Sunday. It was quite different than I'd expected but it was nice. My kids *loved* RE and begged to go back so that takes care of my biggest worry. I'm pretty sure we'll be going to the Full Moon Dance at the end of next month so we'll get to see how that goes. I'm hoping to make a home there.

I'm glad to hear you and your kids enjoyed your visit. That's great!

I'm curious to learn what was different from what you expected.

Wonderful that you may have found a church home. I hope it continues to be a good fit for you.

Thanks for letting us know!

I heard back from the RE Coordinator and she told me about the programs for kids and it sounds great! This year is Earth year and they will be focusing on connecting with the Earth, which is awesome! We're both really excited to go and check things out this weekend.
