fleece for covers??

Ok I know that you are supposed to buy the expensive fleece online but I am a beginning sewer and I wanted to experiment with the scraps I had lying around. I surprised myself!
Now I have made a 3 little cute fleece covers. I doubled the fleece layer. Problem is it is your standard chain fabric store fleece. I tried putting a wet wash cloth inside of one and squeezed it. The water went right through. Is this a reliable way to test it? I read on one site you could do that but it may not be the same because the composition of water and urine is different.
I have a bit more fleece lying around but I don't want to make more if it isn't going to work.
Any experience with this out there??

I have always used WM fleece and now I have Joann's fleece, that really doesn't seem much different, except that they call it "non-pill" fleece. I know what that means, but the thickness is no different than WM. I actually got it cheaper than WM because they had a B1G1Free deal. I know one is suppose to use the mega fleece online, but never had the money for it, or a credit card.

I make a double layer cover, and I use strips of fleece for the elastic casings for the sides, back and sometimes front. I have been known to use a strip of PUL down the middle of the cover for night time (this is caught by the stitching through all the layers when I top stitch in the casings). If the diaper has enough soaker fabric, then the cover is only to protect my furniture. Now, when the baby sits in the carseat, it will wick through, no matter how long they had been changed before. So, night time covers work best for car trips. But, they are slightly stiffer.

I have been able to use the chain store fleece without much trouble at all. It usually wicks at the legs before the middle, but that is also because the diapers have wicked that way. And, with the casings right next to the openings, this usually is only an issue at night. That is why I like that 3rd layer right there.

I have also been known to use recycled fleece for covers. If it is really nice, I use it on the outside and inside. If I have been able to get new fleece for the outside, then I use recycled fleece (from blankets, robes, heavy sweaters, etc from thrift shops or our closet where I was going to minimize) for the inside. This has cut a lot of cost, and it doesn't make any difference. Especially when I want to make AIOs for my DH to use, the inner fleece is not seen.
