I think my dog is dying.

OK, so technically she's my roommate's dog. She's a lapdog and she's pretty old. Lately, she's been acting weird. She just lays around with this sad look on her face all day. When we try and take her outside, she just cowers until we take her back in. She's never played much, but she at least used to walk around when we took her out. She's not been eating much either. I've seen her eat one slice of cheese in the last few days and that's it. DH keeps finding her in secluded spots, like under the desk or behind the bed, lying very still and barely breathing.

We're also worried about her behavior. She snapped at DS when he was trying to get her to play (he was a bit in her face though). The weird thing is that she attacked DH's foot the other day. He took her outside to pee and she cowered there for a minute and he walked over to her and she attacked his foot pretty viciously. Good thing DH was wearing steel-toe boots at the time.

We're really worried that this behavioral change means she's dying. It's going to crush my roommate. Should we try and get RM to take her to the vet?

She sounds like she's in a great deal of pain, not sure if it is end of life or not. I'm so sorry for what you're going through, I know first hand how difficult it can be to be an animal lover and not be the one in charge of the decisions. I suspect the dog would be eternally grateful if you could somehow get her owner to provide some end of life care.

Wishing you the best.

(I'm not your vet, and this isn't medical advice)

Most definitely you should take her to the vet. Even if she is old, there might be something not life threatening wrong with her. Living in pain is no way to live and there may be something inexpensive which could be done. In any case....it's worth looking into.

I've thought that about my dog twice now as he ages and experienced drastic behavioral changes - 1st time was lyme disease 2nd time was a barely functioning thyroid. With treatment, he is well again. It sounds like your dog is in pain. I'm sorry you are going through this.

We talked to RM about it. He's going to take her to the vet as soon as he can. It's kind of difficult, since he is working mandatory overtime 2nd shift in a factory and by the time he manages to drag himself out of bed in the morning, it's almost time for work again. We'd take her, but we know nothing about her to be able to tell the vet, plus we can't pay for it. Hopefully soon he'll be able to get her in.

I agree to take her to the vet - who knows what could be bothering her. It may be something serious or something quite simple. Suggest that your roomie have a full thyroid panel done. If it's expensive you can have the vet draw the blood and send it to hemopet for a full interpretation: http://www.hemopet.org/
