September Dingos, Run This Way! - Page 8

Yay Nic! I SO wish I was running it with you. My in-laws....I love them, but they are super frustrating at planning, so we just decided not to go down. Prayers for Nili.

I know not everybody's on FB...my dh's grandmother died on Friday night. she was a really cool person and super funny, all about family, and made the best of a lot of situations (7 kids, alcoholic husband, etc). and only 77. so, we will add a trip to Chicago to our already insane fall but we need to do it to celebrate her. :

I had the BEST run this morning! It was only 2.5 miles or so but it was almost all barefoot, and the rest was in VFFs. I had to rein myself in from going farther bc I don't want to hurt my ankles, but it was so much fun, it felt like playing.

we leave for Toronto for the film festival on Thursday! I am going to try to run there, it's supposed to be beautiful and I'm taking my Garmin so I can try to find my way back to the hotel if needed. And maybe we'll meet some movie stars. take care mamas and have a great labor day.

MB - sorry to hear of your DH's grandmother's passing.

Having a rough day. DH jumped down my throat when I started to explain that we need to do some financial stuff due to the credit card balance that he's run up on my card for the business. Look fella, you got yourself into this situation, I'm trying to help. You can shut up and listen to me for a few minutes.

On top of that, I had to go back to my sports guy on Friday as my arm has been bothering me again. He helped me and it's feeling better, but is sore. And I'm tired, definitely a bit too much training and it's time for recovery rides. So on Saturday DH and I were riding and I spun out while trying to climb a rock and fell over onto my bad arm and hit my head. Now my shoulder is sore and I have whiplash.

Grocery store and errands and dog walking today. Maybe a gentle bike ride this afternoon, we'll see.

G. I can empathize with the $$ arguments, lately. Bummer.

What/where is the cheapest source for BodyGlide? I have a wicked chafe on my bra area and where my shorts end under the skirt on my legs. I definitely need something for longer runs.

Nic, drugstore.com if you can't get to a local running store. but most any running store should have some.
Oooh, I just realized I have a $10 coupon for New Balance stores so maybe they have some, they're just up the road.

Nic, the 305s are at a great price lately when I look around. I am this close - it will meet my needs but I hate buying old technology.

cfg, feel better soon

JG - dh is at work today also. I think these are the harder than'regular' workdays as everyone else seems to have fun plans with family. Do you have a membership at Wonderlab?

ashcav, way to get 10 miles in.

mamabeth, I am sorry your trip to Chicago has such a sad underlying reason. Losing a good family member hurts. Meanwhile, enjoy running in the hopefully cool north.

grnmtnmama, I hope get recovered from all the intense work you have been doing w/o more injury. Feel better soon!

Today's 3 mile recovery was tough. How can 3 be hard?

No, no Wonderlab membership . I bet it's mobbed today anyway. We're going to drive up to Brown County SP and go to the Nature Center and for a short hike. It's only $5 to get in (since I didn't buy a season pass there either....), but still pretty cheap. Wanna come !

mamabeth ~ so sorry to hear about your GMIL. I hope you have an enjoyable trip to Chicago, in spite of the circumstances.

Mandy ~ take it easy on the shoulder .

Nic ~ have you tried just plain Vaseline? I've heard it works pretty well for chafe.

Time to muster the troops here and head up to the state park .

Yes, but it stains. Not that it really matters, I guess. The New Balance store here has Body Glide for $7.89. It's probably worth it. Is it worth it?

Is this the Garmin watch I'd want to get? The price is not bad. Did Costco have something else at one point? I have a membership there.

Hooray for all the good runs the dingos are putting up this weekend!

nic~: for Nili. : Re: the Garmin, that one does not have GPS. It looks like it uses a foot pod for distance, which isn't as accurate, and you wouldn't be able to download a map of where you went, if that matters to you. Costco does have the 305 periodically, and I think they're about due to have it again soon. The last time, I think it was $140 or $145, which is a pretty good deal.

mandy~

mommajb~I hear you about the old technology, but to be honest, I have heard very little complimentary about the 405 vs. the 305. In fact, I have a friend who recently returned her 405 so she could get a 305 instead.

I had a nice morning volunteering at a race. It was a 10 miler that my track coach is a race director for. I got a race shirt (really nice tech t) and a bag for my efforts, and it was fun as always. And the guy from the bike ride on Saturday actually DID come find me and we talked for quite awhile. He's pretty cute without a bike helmet and glasses on. Of course, I'll probably never see him again, but he knows my first name and several races that I've done, so maybe he'll look me up on Facebook or something.

My house is a disaster and I really need to do some cleaning before DS gets home this evening. And go to the grocery store. And take a nap, because I am TIRED. The alarm went off at 4 AM this morning. It was so early that the dog didn't even blink when I turned the light on.

mamabeth - I'm sorry about DH's grandmother.

mandy - ouch. Take care of yourself.

That was such a weird illness I just had. Six hours of fever, 24 hours of achiness, and today I'm fine. I never even really felt sick. Thankfully no one else has gotten it so far. It's really not a big deal except that dd1 *always* throws up with a fever which would make it a bigger ordeal for her.

rr: Tried to make up the 15 I missed yesterday. Only made it 13.5 and it was a bit slow, but I guess I was just sick yesterday so at least I have an excuse.

Back on the real roads today was a bummer after running the trail yesterday! DH got the tiny little iPod thing set up, though, and loaded with some music, so that was a treat. I had bruises on my hips from iPod corners bumping them through my pockets.

My ankles hurt this morning. A lot. What's up with that? I don't know what on earth I did yesterday to give me ankle pain. Standing up in the kitchen barefoot? Maybe. I must've been standing funny without realizing it.

Today is the last day for awhile we don't have plans, so I figured I'd let the kids choose what we did. DS, 3.5, wanted to go to the toy store. We tried two local ones (both closed) before heading to Toys R Us. Where we spent the next TWO HOURS. I tend to be a "hurry, hurry, let's go; we're going to be late, you don't need to push all of the buttons" kind of mom, so it was quite an experience to stand aside and Zen my way through. The kids rode the exercise bike attached to the computer thing. They pushed the button on every toy that had a sample button, and got a whole aisle of Barbie cappucino machines going all at the same time. They sat on the floor and read books. They were mad the train set was in a glass case so they couldn't play with it. They went to the bathroom twice. It was a long two hours; I should have brought my book.

After lunch and half an hour of TV at home, we're ready to head out again. To the park, I think DD said. This is the time of day when I totally crash and need a nap. Luckily we have cans of Coke left from our junkfood-laden cookout yesterday, so maybe that will keep me going.

Three more days until the start of kindergarten!

I'm waiting for a load of laundry to finish spinning so I can throw it in the dryer and then head to the grocery store. I have piles of laundry left, unfortunately.

Nic - I meant to comment to you before - what the heck happened with dh's job offer? They promised him a job before making sure they could afford it? And let him move across the country and then decide they're not sure? That's pretty bogus to use my dd's term. I have a garmin 305 and love it, especially for when I want to do a certain distance, and am not really sure where to run. I can just put it on and run out half the distance and turn around and I don't have to plan every route ahead.

mommajb - I was going to say the same as tjsmama. I haven't heard that many great reviews of the 405, and I've been very pleased with the 305, although since I don't use the heartrate monitor, I'd be fine with the one without, too.

grnmtnmama - be careful out there! and : to dh on your behalf.

Hey, everyone. I've still been lurking along here..

Today I did my first run of the Couch to 5K program - barefoot! It was great. Totally pain-free and enjoyable.

Thanks mamabeth and CFG for pointing me to Barefoot Running! I really appreciate it. I plan on taking the C25K slow, maybe even slower than it calls for..

I am so excited! I haven't had a run without shin pain in over 2 years! Woohoo!

Catching up....

Decent weekend at MIL's - I ran 18 yesterday morning (first time with a gel - I was amazed by how much difference it made. I was all hopped up. ) and then schlepped through the MN state fair with dh and MIL and the kids. So I'm pretty exhausted.

Question on the gels - how do you all carry the dang things? I'm tempted to blow $50 on a running skirt with pockets, but I can't really afford it.

I've tucked one into my running bra, but then again, there's plenty of extra room in there since my assets are rather minimal in that department . Usually, I'll drive out and plant a gel and some water about 7-9 miles into my planned course so I don't have to carry the darned thing though.

We ended up having a great afternoon at the state park. DS requested driving through the campground so he could look at RVs (his current obsession...), DD1 wanted to climb the scary-high fire tower, and DD2 wanted to have a pony ride at the saddle barn. We did all those things, took a short hike, and went to the nature center too . Afterwards, we met DH at the IU outdoor pool for one last swim of the summer (sniff... sniff...). Much fun was had by everyone, especially me!

If I'm running long enough to need fuel, then I carry water, which means I have my camelbak that I can put stuff in. I've also tucked a gel or a package of sport beans in the teeny tiny pocket in my running shorts.

I have a pair of running shorts with a zipper in them that works. I have also seen people just safety pin them on their shorts(or skirt-or if you run with a fuel belt for water-tuck them in there...

and the body glide is soooooo worth it-I even use it on my toes for my long runs to help minimize blisters

nemesis - that's awesome that you were able to run pain free! So glad you'll take it slow, too, it's so unbelievably important to do so.

penelope - I'm coveting one of those $50 skirts w/ all the pockets, too, but that is WAY over my budget. Are you talking about runningskirts.com? If so, I recently checked and they had the camo color 1/2 off if you don't mind the pattern. I stick gels in my bra sometimes, too, sometimes it chafes other times it doesn't. I know you like skirts, but if you can put up w/ shorts Marshall's and TJ Maxx have a big selection of running shorts. I found a pair there with really roomy pockets for $10.

Definitely check costco.com for deals. They will mail stuff to you (if you can wait ) and they have way more than the individual stores.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your *other* mom's breast cancer. I hope her treatment and healing all go really well and she's soon on the road to recovery.

And about dh's job - I'm totally shocked to read that the job is now in jeopardy and you guys are looking again!? WTHeck?! That is awful! I don't blame you for being worried. Vent away!

Wow, you are one patient mom! :But I do like the idea of bringing a book and just letting them take their sweet time!

Yeah, me too. Why do I love this smilie so much?

Hello to everybody! I'm 3 days late on my running. I didn't have energy yesterday - no other excuse, sorry that was the best I could come up with. So I'm dressed and ready, and I'm biking the kids over to their grandparents this morning so I can do 5 miles in peace and quiet. :

I picked up a race belt or an spi belt on the cheap. It has a couple of pockets (phone, bloks, key)and 3 loops for gels, and clips for a race number. It isn't name brand and I put an extra loop in the elastic because it wouldn't adjust small enough but other that it works for me.
