September Dingos, Run This Way! - Page 2

Penelope: I'd love to read the article, too.

Geo: For a 15 minute recess, it's even worth it if it takes them 5 min. to get to the play area. I believe the main thing is getting them out of their classroom and outdoors. But I hear you on choosing the more crucial battle to fight - man, where's another concerned mom/dad when you need one?

bec: : for Katie!

Sarah!

Gaye: How about a small salad prepared in advance - like a cucumber salad? Takes up only a little fridge space and pretty easy to make.

RR: 3 quick miles yesterday. Trying to figure out what to do here for my next run, which is supposed to be 5. I could skip it (make today a rest day) and do my next LR tomorrow. We will be visiting family from Thurs - Sunday, and if I don't squeeze that LR in before we leave, it won't get done. I think I could manage to make up that shorter run, though, so that really speaks for switching them around this week. I think I'll do it.

Welcome back LaLaLaLa.

tjsmama, I say bagged salad or a chocolate dessert.

drjen, I am glad other people's mature 12 yo ds do odd things too. We haven't had shaving cream all over the place yet but that may be because we shave with hair conditioner. Great job on the runs.

Mel, it sounds like you have a plan for the long run. They are hard to fit in on a weekday aren't they?

Wow, that one arm pit hair really needed some shaving cream to make it smooth.

I outright don't give a cellphone number to the schools, and I also mark dad as "call first." It's never worked. I will often sit there on the phone with the person and say, oh, my husband's not at home? To which they admit they hadn't yet called. "But your son is sick" is somehow the excuse. Like dad can't hold a 101 fever all afternoon?

This evidently isn't a new problem. I came down with a 102 F fever in 7th grade (and ended up the sickest I've ever been -- I was out more than a week). The school couldn't reach my mom at work, so they called our emergency contact people so as not to "disrupt dad at work." The emergency contact person said I didn't sound that sick, and I should walk home. It took me an hour to walk the mile. My mom was so pissed.

Geo~:::: That is soooooo funny about the armpit hair!!!

Jaygee~thank you for mailing the socks, I'll let you know when they arrive. You are a huge help! Also, I know you've heard me say this before, but 4GRAMS of fish oil really helped my rage during my cycle.

RR: 6 miles on the TM, 4 at 7:12 pace. After running that, the cool down felt slow and easy.

I"ve been up since 4:30am thinking about my to do list and other things. I was able to get up at 5ish to make muffins when I found that I had left croisants in the oven from dinner, then check email, run my m ileage, and now off to shower.

to everyone!

Lalala I hope you can find a race with a shirt b/c it really is such a great motivator and will REALLY make you feel like a runner!

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to motivate ds to use the bathroom at school. He's currently obsessed with those Lego toys called Bionicles - maybe I can pay him $3 a week to use the toilet at school? :

Gaye, bread is not hard. You just need to be at home while it's rising and baking. Here's my recipe:

1 c. warm water
1/2 T yeast (or one package)
1 T sugar
2.5-3 c. flour (I like 1 c ww, 1.5 c white)
2 T oil
1 tsp salt.

Mix yeast, sugar, and water, and watch for yeast growth (one minute or so.) Add flour, oil, and salt; mix well/knead until dough is smooth, not sticky. Let rise until doubled (usually 30 minutes in a warm kitchen.) Knead into a loaf shape, place on greased cookie sheet, let rise 30 more minutes. Bake 30-35 minutes at 350. (Bottom of the bread should be baked and bread should sound hollow when tapped gently.)

We do bread several times a week, and then make croutons or French toast with the inevitable leftovers.

Yeah, my kid is sick. WHich is why you should call his DAD, who is closer to the school physically and will actually be home with the kid. URGH. It is sometimes disgusting how little respect dads get when it comes to taking care of children.

Gaye, I was going to suggest salad too, and dessert :. Please pass on all the Dingo well-wishes to Amy when you see her.

about the shaving cream and the armpit hair! Although that sounds like a real mess, DrJen.

RM, I didn't make it to the post office yesterday, but your package of socks is in my bag, ready to go this morning. The socks are big, but I just roll the top over once so they don't cover my knees. So what if the heel on my ankle instead .

Lalala ~ hope you can find a race. Check your local YMCA. Most have 5Ks in the fall, with shirts .

Our van is still at the body shop, so DD and I will walk with the jogger to pick up DH's truck on campus (4 miles or so) and then go to the YMCA so I can lift weights and register for my intro to yoga class . Would you believe that I've walked 20 miles since last Thursday . I'm actually sore from all that walking, and pushing DD up all the Bloomington hills.

our school and (daycare before that) has gotten good about calling dad if someone needs to get K. they seem to have grokked that he works one block away and doesn't travel all the time like i do. however, if something just needs a discussion they'll track me down. it works. having DH do the majority of the dropoffs has helped i think.

planning an afternoon 1.5 hour ride today, time to get cranking if i'm going to be productive.
DH does dropoffs for us too, I do think that has also helped us.

I haven't run in a week, I am feeling so cranky!

Leftovers? How? Why? This is as bizarre a thought as an anti-berry diet.

Fresh bread and leftovers are not uttered together in my house.

I told the teacher this morning that I felt really bad for her -- no recesses for her class! Surely she must be climbing a wall by the end of the day with these kids needing physical activity.

I know I'm not the first to complain.

They get afternoon recesses back starting today. Mornings are still indoors. :

Memorizing this for Back to School night. Awesome.

Emma Kate's explanation of the schedule puzzles me. Lunch is at 10:30, followed by rest time, then indoor play, then outdoor play if they clean up the toys and stuff quietly and quickly enough. Seems like a lot of back and forth between loud and quiet. However, she seems to have trouble remembering so I hope I can find out from an adult how the day is set up.

Wendy, I hope they get morning recess back soon.

Oh, I know bread's not hard, I just don't think I'm going to have enough time at home to do it. As in, I'm meeting friends to run in the morning, probably won't be home until noon or after, would like to leave to drop the stuff off by 3 at the latest, and will have to make the manicotti, too. I'm mostly worried about the rise time...it takes a little longer here because of the altitude.

So, um, yeah. My peach jam didn't set up. : Anybody want a jar of peach sauce? I've got 8 of 'em...

rr~Track workout done, 300's this morning. 9 of 'em, with 100 recovery and an extra lap after #3 and 6. My Garmin is dead/frozen up, so that drove me nuts. And it will drive me even more nuts not to have it for this morning's bike ride. I know it will come back on eventually, it always does, but I need it to do so NOW please.

My general tactic is to approach with the attitude that the teachers are wonderful human beings doing wonderful things for our children, and I just want to know what I can do to help out. It has served me well on everything but keeping Karen awake during math.

geo - i'm 5 minutes away from school, working from home, but dh always gets the call first. (as planned, since he answers his cell and i never know where mine is) then again, this is california. sometimes there are only dads in the family

GAYE! i have another ITBS question!
Should I run track tonight or not? I'm stretching, icing, strengthening but I am certain it will start bothering me like it did last week. Is it best to not do any running until I feel no pain in that area? Or is it OK as long as I'm not limping?

As always, THANK YOU!

One of these days I really will learn how to read. Thanks, though, Jen!

Clothes - The preschool always asked to have a spare set of clothes, as did the kindergarten. Now, it's just sort of habit, even though teachers don't ask for it anymore. We've had any number of times it has come in handy!

Katie - The tic seems to be back, but it seems like it is milder and happening less frequently. Katie did have a big melt down about them last night, though. I think part of it is an emotional release as a result of the body work she had done on her. But, also, a response to all the attention we have been paying it in the last few days. She feels bad that she's not able to control the tics. She knows we want them to stop, and she is feeling guilty that she can't control them herself. She was able to tell me all that this morning, but last night, was just beside herself, the poor thing. I spent a lot of time last night and this morning reassuring her that she wasn't doing anything wrong. It just broke my heart.

my dh is always complaining that the school refuses to email him, despite us asking EVERY SINGLE YEAR for six years now to put him on the list too. I don't think it's out of spite, just out and out sexism. He does at least as many dropoffs and pickups, and since last year it's pretty much all him when someone gets sick. :

I have been having a hard time last week and this week with my sermons. so, I'm trying to just distract myself until something occurs to me it's worked before....

I ran 2.2 this morning, barefoot and in VFFs. CFG, my foot hurts some today so I'm going to take two days off this time vs. just one. I also ordered some XC flats to try too....they were super cheap and I just can't imagine not doing my half some way. don't tell the BF forum :

And that's probably because you're in elementary school where somehow most elementary school teachers will tell you when you first meet them (as preservice teachers) that "I'm no good at math" of course many of the women in my classes are damn good at figuring out how much something is going to cost if it is 65% off, but they can't do math

Oh my gosh, bec, that breaks my heart. Reading it makes me feel like crying, too. I hope that helps her feel better to get it all out of her system. Poor kid.

Ahh, first day of school for C today! She was excited, I was excited. It's nice to have a few hours of no children. Now I'd better make the most of them, our upstairs looks like a bomb went off. But I had to check in with my Dingos.

Great article Penelope!
Welcome back Lalala!
for Katie Bec.
Gaye - I say salad and dessert too. I'm sure it won't matter if it's bagged or whatever, I'm sure she'll be psyched not to have to make anything.

No RR for me today but I've got my new and improved TKD tonight. An hour and a half instead of 50 minutes and if Monday's warm-up was normal I'm sure I'll be limping home. All of my previously ignored and forgotten muscles are quietly wincing and crying today. It's good for me. I just hope I can keep up when we spar since most of the students are 14 year old black belts.
