Need expert advice-please.

I was told to stop nursing my 15 month old today because I found out I am pregnant. The catch is that I have a blood clotting disorder, mthfr, that requires me to take lovenox(blood thinner), prometrium, and 4 additional mg of folic acid because my body doesn't process it like it should because of the disorder, which we all know is vital to baby's development. I have had a miscarriage so that and worry that nursing will take the folic acid my body doesn't want to absorb anyhow is the concern.

I am so sad, my DS and I have a wonderful nursing relationship and I wish we could continue, it seems too risky though. Does anyone have any knowledge in this area? I can't seem to find anything online about someone else in the same situtation...surely I am not the first! :

Good luck with your search for info, I did a quick search and found this:

Just from that, it looks like the MTHFR is more of a problem than the breastfeeding is, though yes, your body will be trying to support the one that is nursing. The lady who posted there is taking more folic acid and other B vitamins, and using it in small amounts all day long.

I am willing to bet someone here has more to add, you may just need to find health care and nutritional folks who are more nursing friendly and will help you do what you want, instead of just telling you the easiest thing for them to say.

Thank you for the link.

I had gone through my third pregnancy on treatment so I do know that I can have a healthy child. My first child was born with heart and spine defects thought to have been caused by the lack of folic acid during development, I wasn't diagnosed until my third pregnancy. The second ended in miscarriage at 9 weeks, possibly due to clotting or genetic issues from the disorder. The last one, who is the one I'm nursing, is perfectly healthy, but I also wasn't breastfeeding during the pregnancy, so that is my main concern. So knowing the severity of the folic acid deficiency through personal experience, I guess I am wondering if anyone knows details about the nutritional needs of a pregnant woman who is nursing. I don't want to risk the life of my unborn child when my toddler is perfectly healthy, but if nursing is not as much of a threat as it may seem for my personal circumstances then I'd love to be able to ask my doctor her opinion before I give it up.
