I hope I can write this in a way that is not confusing. I am selectively vaccinating my 20-month old son on a somewhat delayed schedule. He has had 4 doses of DTaP and recently had his fourth doses of HiB and Pneumococcal vaccines. He has had no other vaccines.
He had those shots together on August 11. He'd received the other HiB and PC shots together a month after the DTaP and hasn't had a reaction to the shots. Although I'd given HiB & PC together in the past, I'd intended to space them out this time, but went along with giving them together that day for reasons I can't really explain. His fourth DTaP shot was more than a month ago, though, probably more like 2 or 3 months. He did have a bit of a warm lump in his arm for a few days after the shots, but I didn't make much of it.
On August 23 he woke up covered in a rash. It looked like an allergic reaction rash, red and slightly raised. I could not think of anything new he, or I (he is nursing) had eaten. I was on ABX for Strep, but had been for several days. I took him into the ped after a few days to rule out Scarlet Fever since I had had strep and the rash looked just like scarletina. Both the rapid Strep & a culture came back negative. Thought it was just a viral rash as he had had some symptons of a virus, such as a stuffy nose and some coughing after the ped visit with the shots, but it was better when the rash showed up.
So the shots were on Aug 11 & the rash showed up on Aug 23 -- is that too far apart for it to be related to the shots? He still has the rash. It no longer has discoloration, but his skin feels sandpaper-y. I am not planning to give him any more vaccines, but would like to know if this could be an allergic reaction to a vaccine component. The description of Scarlet Fever made we wonder -- the rash is an allergic reaction to the toxins caused by the Strep bacteria. Made me curious whether this was an allergic reaction to the vaccine ingredients.
