peeing beside the potty

Hello,

I have just started ECing PT with my 13 month old DD and need a little help, please.

We have done lots of naked time and I am offering her the potty after she wakes and after meals. But I haven't any success getting her to go on the potty. She will sit and sit and sit and when I finally stand her up she will go pee or poop right beside the potty! She will go in the shower or on the bathroom floor nearly every time I offer her but never in the potty.

Any tips on getting her to make the connection?

Thanks so much!

I'll bet she makes the connection, but sitting on the potty is too focused/pressured (not that you are pressuring her, but she's trying too hard), and she's having a hard time relaxing to let the pee come out. Once she's off the potty, the pressure's off and the pee comes out. A totally normal stage. Talk to her about it. Say, "isn't it funny how when you TRY to pee, it's harder?! Then when you "give up" the pee just comes out? Here's what I do when that happens to me..." Encourage her to take a deep breath with you and relax her whole body. Distract her by reading a book or something. Have her stand up and then sit right back down on the potty. But even if you don't do anything, it will pass. Here's a thread about it: http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...ighlight=after
