Vote in Poll about Appropriateness of Breastfeeding Doll

The Philadelphia Inquirer had an article today about a doll, made in Spain, that breastfeeds from a vest that a child wears. The doll makes suckling sounds and will burp when done. The breasts on the vest are represented by two flowers. The doll soon will be sold here and people are getting all up in arms about it. There is a poll at the link below about whether this doll "goes too far." So far (not surprisingly), the vast majority say it does go too far. There's also some very uneducated comments being made (scroll down to below the article to read). I wrote a comment, too - see comment by "mtairymom."

I'm always amazed at the lack of reading comprehension you see when people comment. Where did some of these people get the idea that the doll would "nurse" on the little girls nipple? It said in the artical that there were sensors in the top that would cause the doll to "suckle". Yet over and over people went off about little girls exposing themselves. Umm, how? It won't work with out the halter.

I happen to think it sounds like a cute and clever idea, but like the one mom quoted I wouldn't buy it because I want my DDs to use their imaginations and I also want to limit the number of dolls the have (less mess to deal with that way) so the ones they do have need to be simple so they can do more with them.

Am I the only one with dd who bfs her doll and even ruffus her pig? No vest required either- just lifts her shirt..... I think it is cool
eta- ruffus is a stuffed pig- not a real one- that would be kind of weird....

I don't want to vote, I've seen that toy and find it ridiculous. Not because kids breastfeeding their dolls is wrong, it's not at all since they are playing mommy or daddy. Babies nor baby dolls need special equipment, just leave out the bottle and any doll is ready to nurse. Maybe if the ads showed children holding and talking to and about their doll to "nurse" it, that would be enough.

I think that the doll is kind of silly. The fact is when you breastfeed, you don't NEED any special equiptment... you don't need a bra with daisies on it, lol. You've already got everything you need! So if a young girl wants to "feed" her doll, she can! The problem with this doll is that, justified or not (not!!!!), it puts a ton of negativity out there about breastfeeding. People start saying horrible things like "ah, breastfeeding has gone too far! This is just a fad!".

However, the bigger issue to me is how many dolls come with a bottle! Leave the bottles out please, toymakers! Maybe if girls didn't have the bottle there to feed their baby doll with, they'd do what's natural and pretend to breastfeed instead!
