Incidentally, while the decision isn't totally official yet, it is looking like we may well go with a homebirth this time. I visited the homer hospital and it was really nice (especially compared with the one I was at last time--which was the nicest in the area)...but I still just get warm fuzzies when I contemplate home for the birth this time. DH seems warming up to it too, but i'm not sure if he's wholly on board, so I need to keep talking with him to make sure we're on the same page. I'm 30wks this week though, so I don't have a ton of time to make up my mind
Where on the peninsula are you? And are you looking for a doula if you do a homebirth? I'm working on being certified and I'm trying to get some experience in, if you're interested!

Oh I love Alton Brown! We used to watch his show, Good Eats, all the time but it is on too late here.

There was a pinata of the Darth Vader's head at Party N crafts... we almost got it for one of my ds' but then we decided on ironman instead... they had a couple hanging from the ceiling over different aisles..

Also, looking for a cool party favor? light saber chopsticks. Not sure how much $ they are, but the "Yoda" set is "kidsize" if they are too pricey, a pair might be a good door prize or game prize (one set instead of a set for each kid..)

I'm in Homer.
Since I'm planning (probably) for home, I hadn't thought about a doula. I had one for my hospital birth last time, because I was thinking that I'd need someone to stand up for me, and also I thought I might want a female touch there...when it came down to it I only wanted my DH I chose that doula based on experience though and during labor (and in retrospect) I realized that i really didn't click with her on a personal level at all, so that is probably a major reason why I didn't want her much, kwim? I have no doubt that it would be really different to have someone I liked better and I'm sure DH would be on board with having someone to spell him off periodically.
SO, if you'd like to drop me a PM with more details about what your standard practice is (visits, fees, etc) I'd be up for talking.

Anyone's kids watching the speech next week? I'm not asking for political reasons (don't ban me ). I'm just curious if anyone IS doing it. I don't know of any grade schools here in Anch.

We are homeschooling and I'd like to watch it. Emma was actually pretty vocal in this last presidential election process, and asked a lot of questions during debates, etc. She seems interested in the democratic process and likes to tune into *all* presidential addresses, so I'm going to see if I can get us hooked up.

Nope. The first set of lesson plans released had to be rewritten by the Dept of Ed. Just KNOWING that there was a need for that leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the whole thing.

That is not a political statement. It is a statement that I believe that public education needs to give a balanced view of politics to kids- if it doesn't then I want no part of it for my kids.

I don't believe any of the "grade schools" in Anchorage are doing it because of the time it will be on the air doesn't coincide with the start of the school day. I believe there are quite a few high school classes that are doing it though.

I may let them watch the online version of the speech later- (AFTER I have read it through myself), but definitely not doing the "watch and teach with THIS lesson plan" thing.

It is on at 8am here, at least that is what time it would be in if they were to air it live.
I will be in the middle of driving my kids to school.

I would tempted to let my kids stay home until its over so they can watch it.

We homeschool, so they won't be seeing it at school. I am a bit torn on this one. My husband is flat out against it because he hates Obama. I don't like him either, but I do want to teach my children that they need to respect the office, even if they don't agree with what the president says. I do not like that they are spending a whole day on activities that the president has put together. To me, sounds quite pushy and as if they are trying to indoctrinate the children. I don't care who the president is -- I don't agree with it. However, if I can watch the speech online first, there is a good chance that I would then watch it with the older two and talk to them about it.

Exactly how I feel too.

I wish that when parents questioned the activities, the district's response was more like "there has been a lot of parent interest in the activity and we always welcome their input" . I felt the response to the questions was all very negative.

Are all the schools doing that? Since they wont be watching the speech, will they still be doing these "activities"? that seems bizarr.

Holy Cranberry and Crowberries Batman!!

OMG, we hit the mother load and could have spent a good 4 more hours picking more.

So far we have one full #10 can! We will probably hit up that patch again next weekend! Whooot Hoooot!!

Real quick - anyone know if the schools are doing anything new in response to the 10yo's death at Hunter due to swine flu? Fbks. Memorial ER went through 1400 masks in 2 days due to this - looks like lots of kids have it or are coming down with it.

P - no, we weren't there Monday since Little Dragons started on Tuesday. We're in KS (come home to swine flu tomorrow - yay) for my sister's wedding but B will be back in karate on Tuesday and we'll be at super Saturday this week.

I don't know because my kids aren't in school, so don't know what schools are showing it or what they are doing. I would think that a lot of the school are going to show it, though, even if they can't show it live. If they don't have something set up for schools on different time zones they are cutting off Alaska and Hawaii, and I can't see Obama letting that happen.
