I'm a runner and would love to take him with me (and he sure does have the energy!) but I don't want to do anything that might harm his back. Assuming I build up his milage slowly, how far is it ok for him to run?

I personally wouldn't run him for more than a mile.
They are already prone to having back issues and running too long could irritate them. Also, remember their short little bow legs!
Dodger's List on Yahoo groups has lots of information on how to properly care for your dachshund to prevent future back problems (IVDD) - which my little one unfortunately has.

I wouldn't do it. I think long distance running puts too much strain on their backs.
Plus my experience (we've got a mini) is that they are much better at quick bursts of speed than long endurance type exercise.
Sometimes I wish I could exercise with our dog, I would really enjoy it. And I don't even run, just walk long distances. But the times I've tried, he just can't hang - and he's still a very young, fit dog! Walking a mile seems to be his limit.
