Knit apron- will it work?

I'm thinking about using cotton yarn (like the kind you'd use for wash clothes) to knit an apron. I'm thinking that it would be a bit like a knit dish towel that you could dry your hands on as you cook. It would be washable (as cotton is), but do you think it would wear well? Or would it just look bad quickly? Do you think it would be too heavy?

Please tell me what you think.

Well, if you're just looking for crafters' opinions, not necessarily the informed opinions of someone who has actually done this ...

My first thought is that it would get awfully heavy--especially if you're using it to wipe or dry your hands. I think it could wear well, but I'd worry about the edges and corners rolling up. If it were going to try it, I'd probably go for a very light cotton (sport weight, or even sock weight) and I'd probably do some sort of finishing on the edges to encourage it to hang straight, rather than curl.

If you used dishcloth cotton I don't think it would work. It would be too heavy and you wouldn't be able to get a tight tie, I'd imagine. Definitely a cute idea and I bet it would work with a lightweight yarn like the PP mentioned.

You might want to use a ribbon tie rather than a knit one, since a knit one will be bulky and stretch (do an eyelet row across the top edge and just weave it through). And weight will totally depend on how big you're thinking - full apron, or just a waist apron?

I made a bathmat out of cotton - double stranded - and while it's not all that heavy to lift, it is heavy enough that it stretches itself out of shape every time I pick it up. Which isn't a big deal for a bathmat, but for an apron might be. I'd definitely look at going with a lighter weight strand.

thanks for your opinions. You said exactly the things I was thinking.
