Why schedules for sleep

Can some one shed some light on this-why do moms feel the need to put there bf babies on schedules or make them go to sleep by them selves-self soothe etc? This is for babies under 6m old. Bf babies wake up more from my exp, so I'm just not getting it, or the schedule thing. The only thing I can gather w/ the schedule is it's a misconception from ffing?

Could be. Also, some women want more control over their lives. I have my baby on a loose schedule--I have to be out the door at 6 am (PT), so I wake and feed one side/pump the other at 5:30. I get home for breakfast at 7:45 and have to be out the door at 8:45 for work. During that hour, I have to feed the baby, pump, shower, dress, and throw something down my throat. I get home for lunch between 11:30-12. I have to be back at 1. DH will have given DD a bottle or two in my absence. I try to nurse and pump then. I finally get off work at 5ish. Keeping her on a somewhat loose schedule regarding eating allows me to know how much I need to pump. Usually there is some left over in the evening.
