Help! - major leaking at night

We're cosleeping, so this is a huge problem. We've had several nights we've had to change the sheets in the middle of the night. My boy is 15 months, 23 pounds, 32 inches? Big boy, but still slender. He's been wearing BG 3.0s at night but started leaking. It's almost as if the more (hemp inserts and BG microfiber) we put in, the more he leaks. I've stripped the diapers.

I live near Cotton Babies (makers of Bum Genius) and I went to ask them about other overnight solutions and almost every mom in the store told me they use disposables at night after a certain age. We just tried some gDs on a roadtrip which worked pretty well at night. But I really don't want to use paper if I can find another good solution.

My boy has VERY sensitive, eczema prone skin. If he sits in a wet prefold for even 15 minutes he gets eczema on his bum that takes weeks to resolve. So best overnight solutions have been fleece or the gD disposable insert.

The leaks are annoying and draining on everyone. Would really love some suggestions.

Thank you for your help!!

(I can knit and I can sew, so if you have any recommendations and can point me in the right direction, those are options, too! Would need good sources for fabrics, though.)

I know a lot of people have had good luck with wool soakers at night, but we have not tried that. We love using Dry Bees Fleece at night with a Super Do Insert. Works great and has for many others. Also I would recommend putting fleece pants on him at night. (and if he wears a onesie, don't snap it down just let it hang out like a shirt).

Also with overstuffing the diaper, it could be open a little at the front where it would allow the pee to come off the top. But the fleece pants might help with that.

No advice here, just hanging around to see what other experienced mamas have to say. I used BG 3.0 for 11 months now without issues. DS is 11 months today.

I imagine the more inserts are in them the less of a seal there is with the outer layer of the diaper to skin. I would try brand new new inserts and a doubler. I'm sure you exhausted the care instructions on their website already.

I would suggest trying wool. It never caused issues for my children with sensitive skin.

We had to go to disposable at night because like yours mine needs to stay VERY dry but mine also reacted to the stay dry fabics.. We didn't need to use sposies cause of leaks though... At favorite nighttime combo that I would have countinued if not for the sensitive poly issue.. was a happy hempy pocket fitted diaper

stuffed with this http://www.wildflowerdiapers.com/sto...idcategory=365 (the ones we had were a diffrent brand but this looks pretty much exactly like it the ones we used were made locally by a mama..

And covered with an Motherease Airflow cover.. http://www.mother-ease.com/cloth-diapers/AirFlowCovers Nothing got past these but still allowed enough air flow to breathe.

We woke up dry always in this but sadly she just continued to react more and more to the fleece and anyoter stay dry materials...

we have great luck with a fitted with doubler and wool soaker for overnight. i bet you could even put a wool soaker over your bg. i definitely like wool interlock soakers better than any other wool i've used. I buy my wool at Naturesfabrics.com from Jeanne, but she also sells sewn soakers at coveredcaboose.com and at a good price!

We also sometimes use pockets at night with 3 inserts, 2 mf and one hemp or visa versa. How many are you using? it does sound like perhaps too many inserts might be affecting the fit around the legs...

hope you find something that works!

What we do for night time is use a bG 3.0 or Mommy's Touch aio. Pretty much any diaper brand we use and go with the 2 inserts like you are doing. A micro and a hemp. Then we use a wonder wraps onesize cover and have no problem with leaks.

I posted something similar right before we went on vacation a few weeks ago-- and it was SO nice over vacation waking up every morning to him dry in a disposable. I hate stripping the sheet on my bed every morning and having pee all over everything. So tonight we're trying g-diapers at night for the first time. I was doing a double or triple stuffed FB with a disana wool cover or snap peas wool cover over it. Poor thing his legs were so splayed out it's not comfortable.

Is the entire insert getting wet? If the diaper is leaking but only the front of the insert is wet, I'd suggest trying a zorb insert on top of the mf insert. Zorb does a really good job of sucking moisture through the whole thing, so you get the full use out of both inserts, end to end.

My LO is only 2 mos old, but I couldn't find a night solution that wasn't super bulky and didn't leak. Sposies worked for the pee (but he poops at night so we change him at night), but leaked poop up the back about half the time
Last night I used a cottonbabies OS insert snapped down in the front for more absorption, with a Rainshine Designs bamboo/zorb insert on top. Both inserts were damp/wet but definitely not soaked, and the moisture was spread end to end, so hopefully that system keeps holding up. It was bulky, but really not too bad. He didn't look uncomfy like other night systems I tried. Funnily enough, it was the first time he didn't poop at night, so I got to test if it worked all night long.

Here is my suggestion to you. When you add extra inserts for absorbency, sometimes there is a gap around the legs because of the bulkiness. My 21 month old (21 lbs) uses middle setting snap at night time. During the day, she has the full size setting, but at night she's on middle size setting. This will solve your problem with leaking. The middle size setting will tighten the leg area even with bulky inserts. My daughter goes 12 hours straight with no leaking. I use 2 One-Size microfiber inserts and 1 Newborn size microfiber insert.

Simply snap and change to smaller setting and that will do the trick!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions!! I'm going to try the middle snap, but I'm skeptical he'll fit with them like that because he's very tall and we haven't been on middle snap for almost 6 months.

Lots of times when he leaks all over, it's as if it all spills out the gap of his legs, but we've had trouble figuring how to "seal the gap" while also having enough absorbency to hold him through the night.

When he doesn't leak, he soaks through 1 reg microfiber, 1 micro infant liner and 1 large hemp babies insert (folded in half).

I'm also going to try putting an extra cover over him, because that might help the bulkiness. Duh, never thought of that!

For those of you using soakers, I have a couple of questions. Do you use them over a pf, or just the wool soaker and nothing else? Any suggestions for sources for free patterns and best wool sources? I'm interested in trying it, especially with winter approaching.

Thanks again!!!

The elastic is to blame

It sounds like the elastic on the legs of your diapers are dying. Its best if you can replace the elastic (I have not done this, but there are lots of tutorials online of moms who have), but just shortening the rise in the diaper will make the leg holes smaller.

We have noticed in our 21 month old, any leaking is more because the velcro closings are dying so she gets the tab stuck on the sheet and rips off the diaper. I am replacing the velcro, but it also helps to wear pants to make sure the diaper stays on.

We have also used wool, but not since she was tiny. I am sure a wool cover would stop leaks, but its definitely cheaper to use fleece unless you (or grandma) are a knitter.

My BG's used to leak at night, too. We don't use them for that anymore. My solution has been a BK organic fitted with 3 joeybunz and wool on top. I use wonderwraps too, but I like wool because its breathable. I got my wool for only about $10 each on Etsy.com, so it doesn't have to be expensive.
