Starting a Minneapolis cohousing group--with an on-site CSA?

Hello MDC peoples,

I have a brainstorm for an intentional community/cohousing situation in Minneapolis and am ISO like-minded families. In a nutshell, it is this: buy a building on a large plot of land (I'm thinking of a closed school building), redevelop the building into a cohousing community (like condos, but with people interested in living in community, and some shared community spaces), make it LEED or Minnesota GreenStar certified with solar, wind, green roofs, rainwater catchment, superinsulated structure, etc. Then, over time, grow into a permaculture-inspired urban CSA on the land, growing the food right in the city! We would maintain some green/play space for the neighborhood, everyone would be welcome, and offer some community garden plots for non-resident neighbors. In my total daydream version, there will eventually be a kitchen producing traditional foods for the CSA shares--kombucha, kimchi, kefir, and who knows what else! And then there will be a local/traditional foods restaurant in the back.......

There is a small group forming that I am involved with interested in just cohousing, but I am hoping to find some other folks who share my vision. I don't think *everyone* would have to be super into farming, but it would certainly help if most people at least thought it was great even if they weren't directly involved much.

Any takers?? : It would be so fantastic! (Or, if I am into the manifesting concept: "It *will* be so fantastic!") And unique!

If you haven't talked to Cohousing Advocates, you should--there are several groups out there that are interested in cohousing communities in the cities. We were part of a forming group in Northfield for awhile, but had to step away due to this pregnancy and work conflicts.

We'd love to be a part of something like this--but after our experience with the Northfield group, we're reluctant due the enormous amount of work we know it will entail. Not that we don't like work--but I'm due in a month and so we're focusing on that for now. I'd love to be kept posted though for when we're ready and itching to get our of our rental!

Hey--see the new thread: http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=1159449 for the upcoming meeting. I'm excited to meet you all in real life! All family types are welcome, I don't see lots (or no) kids as a barrier in and of itself if you wanted to participate, you'd just need a bigger space.

I know I'm not a mother, but has this idea manifested? I'm moving with my son and wife to the twin cities from Boulder, CO and will be looking to build or join something like this or similar.

best,

tim
