tuberculosis vaccine?

We are in Brazil, and apparently they give a BCG tuberculosis vaccine here. My older kids are mostly vaxed, the baby not at all. We're kind of holding out with him, definitely going to vaccinate selectively and slowly.
Anyone have any information about this vaccine? Risks, effectiveness, etc.?
Also--anyone else abroad, and feel like they're dealing with different vax issues than in the U.S. due to disease prevalence, conditions, etc.?
Thanks!

That'd explain the false positives that I got whenever I had a tb test done. I was born there and had the shot. OP I personally don't think the vaccine is very effective since I know I don't have the disease but always got a false positive. Although if I lived there I would think about doing selective/delayed shots.

So much for informed consent.

I had to have this to enroll in school in France.

It's basically useless, in fact last year France removed it from the list of required vaccinations for school enrollment (only Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio are now required).

As it's of French origin, it must REALLY be useless for them to have taken it off the schedule!

Sorry not to be more specific, if memory serves it doesn't protect against the most dangerous forms of TB and has a low rate of protection for the strains it does supposedly protect from...

Here's an article that I found on the hidden facts about TB and the shot, it also states a homeopathic treatment for TB

That's so weird..I wonder why Tetanus? It's not like it's communicable.

Probably because its combined with diptheria in the vax anyways.

Most likely reason - they produce it in the country and it creates jobs.

As in France, the Calmette TB vaccine was taken off the vaccination schedule of Finland in 2005 too. I wonder if most European countries did the same?

Thanks for the input. I guess we won't be doing the TB.
It's weird, there are all these shots that are "required" here, but so far it doesn't seem like there a mechanism in all of this bureaucracy to ensure that the kids have them. (Maybe because they're in a private school.)

That's probably why.

Did I mention that even though only the 3 vaxes are required for school (or daycare or any public, collective activity) you can't find a shot with just the three? The minimum is four: DTap Polio, and there's a 5 vax shot which includes Hib, I believe.

My mom is from the Philippines where the TB vaccine was given to just about everyone there. My mom got the vaccine, but I never got the vaccine (I was born in the U.S.), but I still tested positive (false positive) as a child. My mom was telling me that her father had tuberculosis, but cured it with good nutrition and he lived into his 90s. He himself told her that good nutrition cures/prevents TB.

Germany, Switzerland, Austria, UK, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium did. I'm sure there are a few more.

Most took it off quite some years ago as it is not effective at all.
