how many PFs and covers and what sizes?

I'm planning on buying GMD prefolds and Thirsties covers to start out with, and I'm thinking about switching to a one size diaper down the road after I figure out what kind of body type my baby has, unless I fall in love with prefolds. I was thinking I'd get the orange edge (newborn) prefolds and also some yellow edge (small) prefolds and the XS Thirsties covers. I'll do laundry every other day.

First, will the yellow edge prefolds fit into the XS covers? The PFs are for babies 10-15 lbs and the covers are 6-12 lbs. I was thinking about getting 24 orange edge prefolds, but I'm not sure how many yellow edges to get. 12? 24? It'd be nice to have everything I need to CD for a few months while I figure out what to do next but not spend more money than I have to since I think I'll switch to a different type of diaper. Do I need more than 5 or 6 covers and can I get away with just buying the XS? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't buy the orange edge, just the yellow. They fit fine in xs covers as long as I used a snappi, I just folded down the front to make them shorter. I had 36 yellow edged which was perfect, my baby pooped every 2 seconds so we went through a LOT of diapers everyday!! I would say 6 covers is ideal... more if you plan to trifold and just lay the diaper in the cover because poop tends to escape easier when you do that.

i've not used gmd pf's so i can't help on the sizing there. i find thirsties rn a little on the large size, so the should work fine with either size pf. imo, 24 of each size would be good, and 6 covers is a great number, though you may be able to survive with less...

What is yellow edge? I bought some newborn prefolds but they are blue I think.

i dont know that brand of covers, but for me i wasted money on the xs/ newborn size. he wore these for not more than 2 weeks and i feel sure the small would have done. same with the dipes; i would have been fine with all small sizes and no nb or xs. my baby was over 9lbs at birth, though (even though ds1 was less than 6).

I made my own prefolds so I cannot comment on size but I have 2 dozen prefolds & that has always been plenty. I wash every 2-3 days & I never run out of dipes.

For covers I used the Mommy' Touch one size covers. I LOVE them. I've been using the same ones since birth & they still work great. That said, I didn't realize how many covers I would need & only had 2 at first - obviously not enough - lol! I now have 7 & that is more than enough. 5 would probably work ok.

Here's a link to some pictures: http://greenmountaindiapers.com/prefolds.htm

The only blue edge I saw was the old standard size, but they look pretty big! I think I've also heard of periwinkle ones, but I didn't see a picture and I don't think they sell them anymore.

You will probably be safe to skip the newborn size prefolds unless you have a small baby. I just folded infant size prefolds down in back and they worked fine. It is so hard to know if it is your first.

6 xs and 6 size smalls should be plenty for the first few months.

Your plan is very similiar to mine I plan to use basically prefolds and some basic fitted for the newborn/infant stage and go the mostly one size/prefolds after that. How the prefolds will fit the covers will depend on how your using them. If your just trifolding in a wrap the yellow edge wont fit some covers with out folding down (but it can be done) I know with the orange edge newborn diapers I have they barely fit trifolded in a bummi super brite newborn I'd have to fold down a yellow edge. If your planning on pinning or snappi then both can just be folded to fit. As far as what you need that will depend. I'm anticipating another small baby my first came home at 5lbs 9oz 18 inches so I do plan on having a dozen actual newborn sized prefolds I probably wont do more than that though because even tiny ones grow fast and I'll be likely combining with sposies at lot in the very begining.
However after that my plan is 1 dozen prefolds per size and 1 dozen onesize and 6-8 covers per size (keeping in mind some sizes will overlap) if I find I need more I'll likely add on a dozen prefolds. 2 dozen diapers seemed to work well with my first though..

I had a baby with such a small bum (still is tiny at 2.5 years old) I went ahead and ordered Orange and Yellow. I figure the Orange can always be used as burp cloths or doublers later so it won't be a total waste even if I have a 10 pounder this time (doubtful).
