Military and mandatory flu shot - Page 2

@ boyzmama: Wow that is crazy, but to be expected from them... I have a feeling they are getting pushier every year!!!
Yucky, I just got a letter from them telling me to bring in DS for his 18 months check-up. I shred it, but wonder if they will pester me about coming in (thanks, no thanks, according to their weird questionnaire DS is speech delayed cause according to them 18 months olds speak in 3 word sentences.... I'm so NOT into those charts when a kid should do what...)

any precedent for military to refuse H1N1 if pregnant?

Please moms, I could use your input quickly. A young woman is being threatened with court marshall if she does not receive H1N1 and she is 18 weeks pregnant.
They do have the grounds to court martial her because she is disobeying a direct order. She is trying to get a medical waiver, but those are hard to get and harder to get quickly.
If anyone knows that this has been granted before, it would help.
Apparently, the package insert saying it has not been tested and has a pregnancy category of C doesn't matter becasue the CDC says it is safe.
Thanks.

I don't think she is going to be able avoid it. What I would do is to insist on the mist then prep with vitamins and on the day, be prepared to blow her nose and use a netti pot in the bathroom to clear her sinuses. A netti pot can usually be gotten in a Walgreens/CVS/Walmart type place.

She will get court-marshaled or receive an article 15 if she refuses. As active duty she has no rights to refuse any vaccines. Unfortunately, that's what she signed up for. However, she can get the shot off-base and make sure to receive a mercury free one. All I can say - as a woman who wants to get pregnant I would get out of the military ASAP. They will shoot you up with EVERYTHING.

Nothing like having no rights when you serve your country hey?!

I have no idea, my husband was threatened with diciplinary action if he didnt get it but then again he isnt pregnant and really had no excuse other than he didnt want it. They told him if he got sick it would be the military that lost man hours and the military that would have to pay to make him better, so it was them that would decide if he got the shot or not. Although, he went and got it, then later got an email to say 'no more active duty to the clinic-we have run out of the H1N1 shot' so...maybe if she just sits tight and waits until the last minute?!

I'm so sorry for her.
I'm Active Duty AF trying to get out of the h1N1 because I'm nursing. I got this reply from FERNG to my post in the January swine flu (2009 H1N1) thread

My friend told them that she was pregnant and got out of it.

(Don't know if there is a better way to paste that in there) but Maybe she can give you more information.

I know even for the regular flu last year. I managed to get out of it mainly by staying out of sight somehow. I showed up on the "list" but my unit supervision just looked over because I was pregnant (and they don't really know what all the rules are), but in May 09, (really after flu season anyway), I got an email from a chief (E-9) in immunizations saying that I need to come in and get my flu shot, and even if I'm pregnant I am still able to get it. Luckly I got the email as I was leaving for Maternaty leave, and never went in and never heard anything else about it. I'm not saying that laying low will work for your friend but it has worked for me. Her squadron, or base may be much more on top of everyone. Just depends on what the supervision has a stick for at the time. Things like that tend to go in cycles. I haven't gotten the regular flu shot this year either, yet...crossing fingers.

I know that the rule used to be, just no flu immunization during the first trimester. But this last fall it changed, The CDC changed it's recommendation from none in first trimester to the flu immunizations are safe for all trimesters. So here at my base anyway, they will give them in all trimesters but if the mother wants to wait until the second trimester they will let her wait. (this is for regular flu and h1n1)

Good luck (hugs)

They are giving parents 2 weeks to get the shot or they will kick the kids out. Anybody know a way around this? I'm speaking not just for me but for a whole bunch of people who vaccinate regularly but don't want this one.
Also worth noting is that I've tried to get a religious exemption for my child but basically got stonewalled for over a year and they wouldn't let my second child into day care with her sister because she wasn't vaccinated and the exemption hadn't gone through yet. I had to go to part time to cover child care and getting day care on the economy is ridiculously expensive. As in I don't think we could afford food expensive.
Any suggestions?
Wow, yes, they did that at my AF base in December. My DS is two and only hada couple spaced out shots at first and then no more, and my dd is 8 months and never had any vaxes. We were in the base daycare since ds was 3 months. Just lucky no one was really paying too much attention to the fact they weren't up on vaxes. But then they came down with the same "you have two weeks to get your kids h1n1 vax" we'll there was no way they were getting that, so I filed religious exemption, for all vaxes but that was on Dec 15 that i turned in the forms. Using the information I got from here, about exemtions. But On the cutoff date of 21 Dec I was told they would not be allowed back the next day. Even though I filed the exemption, they said they turned it into their flight chief and since they didn't have a reply my kids could not come back.. I'm still waiting, I contacted this flight chief lady and she says she turned my paper work into AF HQ and is waiting for a reply, and it can take along time. I'm about to go to my 1st sergreant and get my Commander involved. I just dont' care for the first shirt we have right now (very rule following women who would not be the type to think it was ok to not vax-I"m sure you know the type). But this is rediculious. I know some moms went and got the vax even though they didn't want to because they wanted to keep their kids in base daycare, and other Moms just left. I don't know of anyone else on base that does not vax though. And I dont understand why my exemption had to go to Headquaters, or what is taking so long.

As Far as your second daughter, (and maybe soon your first) you might qualify for a military child care subsity. I talked to them and They said I quailfy, but I just haven't finished the process yet, my kids are currently in a in home daycare. But they are supposed to offset the cost of approved daycare centers so you'd pay about the same amount as on base and they pay the rest. It's called MCCYN (military child care in your neighborhood)

Hope this helps! I feel you pain.

The commander letting my friend off (and she lied about being pregnant - she's going to say she MCed later) was an individual thing. It's going to depend on the individual chain of command and also the individual bases immunization clinic. If your friend has been threatened with court marshal, then that strategy obviously won't work. Part of the reason that it worked for my friend is becuase she went to a huge flu vaccine round up where many, many people were in a big room and it was chaotic. I'm not sure if her commander let her off or if it was the soldier marking who did and didn't get the shots.
