Which Magazines Do You Subscribe To and Why?

For awhile I stopped subscribing to magazines and just tried to utilize online editions... but it isn't the same. I like to read a magazine on the deck or soak with one in the tub, etc. so now I try and pass magazines along to friends and get their used copies when they are done to make it less expensive and I get to "recycle" in a way. I am always on the hunt for neat magazines that are off the beaten track so I thought it would be fun to see what other people get to see if there are any that I've not heard of or haven't tried that are worth exploring.

My magazines:

Mothering
Mother Earth News (bi-monthly) http://www.motherearthnews.com/
Living Crafts (quarterly) http://www.livingcrafts.com/
Early American Life (bi-monthly) http://www.ealonline.com/
Mary Jane's Farm http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/magazine.html

I am thinking of subscribing to Garden & Gun simply because it is always full of great articles about southern living that is quite different than the usual craft/recipe fare that can be found in Southern Home Living. http://gardenandgun.com/

I am also thinking of subscribing to National Geographic but I've just been getting older library copies lately so I may just stick with that for the time being because it is free!

I am also considering The Word Among Us and Canticle, two Catholic publications.

What about you? Anything worth recommending?

Cook's Illustrated, because it is all kinds of awesomeness. They have detailed articles accompanying each recipe about the 35 different ways they tried making it and why the way in the recipe is the best. Every single thing I've made from them has been off-the-charts good.

Astronomy, because I've always been fascinated with the universe. The photographs are stunning, and the articles are very interesting even if a bit of it goes over my head.

Sunset, which I used to like more than I do now. The recipes aren't that great anymore, and I only use their travel/gardening tips every great once in a while. I don't think I'll renew this one.

I used to subscribe to:

Companion Parrot Quarterly

Mothering Magazine

I don't anymore because we can't afford to waste money like that.

I love Brain,Child and Secular Homeschooling Magazine.

I also have a subscription to National Geographic, but rarely read it anymore.

I used to get mothering, but I cut back on my spending, so it had to go..

I get Woman's Day (I think?) because my mom orders it for me in one of those buy three books, get a magazine sub free or something.. some of the stories are ok, but mainly I like the coupons

My sons get Ranger Rick, and Zoobooks and something else?? Highlights maybe?

Mothering and Family Fun. I hate that FF is run by such a huge corporation as Disney, but I like a lot of the craft ideas.

Orion, because it's awesome. It's kind of eco-intellectual without being snobby or heavy.

Parenting, because I had a free trial and they just kept sending them. Ditto Family Fun.

I had a free trial of Rolling Stone recently that they sent way longer than they probably should have. That was fun for a while.

I get National Geographic because my SIL gets it for us every Christmas. I love it.

I used to get Mothering but let it lapse. I discovered I only missed it a little, so I guess I don't need it.

I used to get Cook's Illustrated and REALLY miss that one. I think I'll get it again someday.

Brain, Child because I like high-quality, intriguing essays about a range of aspects relating to motherhood, from a magazine with no particular parenting philosophy's ax to grind.

Bookmarks because I love reading and a whole magazine of book reviews is super-helpful. I like the way they excerpt a bunch of reviews about the same book for a range of opinion, and I like their features (historical novels, SF, politics, etc.)

Bitch because even though my knowledge of pop culture is not great (what with the no TV thing) I really enjoy reading a feminist response to it.

And then, of course, there are the mama zines. My favorites are Hausfrau, Med School Mama, East Village Inky, and Madre Zenith

Mothering, and I love it! I also give a subscription to my bf each year for her b-day.

We get:

Entertainment Weekly, because we are all pop-culture junkies

Reminisce and Reminisce Extra because I must secretly be an 80 year old woman - I love stories about the Depression and the World War II homefront

We have recently subscribed to the National Catholic Reporter on the recommendation of a Franciscan priest we know, and Bust because we have to drive over 100 miles to get one at a newsstand.

We also get Mother Jones, Archeology Today, PC World, and Mental Floss.

I love National Geographic and subscribe from time to time, but it seems like the issues that come out while we are subscribed are not that interesting, so we let it lapse. Then we will see 3 or 4 fabulous ones in a row that we have to buy at the newsstand so we subscribe again. Repeat cycle endlessly.

Does anyone get Fate magazine? It sounds interesting, but I have never seen one in real life.

Mothering (why, I dunno--kidding!)
Cooking Light (good info, recipes)
Cookie (I have no idea how I started getting this)
Wired (for DH, but I read it more than he does)
Real Simple (cause it was cheap, saw it mentioned here)
Organic Gardening (why, I'm not sure b/c I don't have a garden)
Glamour (promotional deal, minus the stanky perfume samples I like it okay)
Game Informer and another similar one (because they came free with a Gamestop membership card)

that's all I can think of ATM, I'm sure I get a few more, though...

Mothering is the only magazine I'm subscribed to, but I keep getting Victoria's Secret catalogs that the previous owner was subscribed to

Backwoods Home - which I love and normally read cover to cover repeatedly
Mother Earth News - which my mom got for us, but I think the subscription is over now
Kiwi - found the first issue @ Sprouts a couple of years ago and I really like it

I use to get Mothering, but keep forgetting to renew.

We have subs to Utne which has all sort of amazing articles from several indepent press sources.

After reading about Bitch in Utne, I may subscribe to it as well after checking it out on the web.

DH gets Popular Science . We both read it, but it's definitely geared more toward men/gadget geeks.

We also get UU World which is a Unitarian Universalist magazine we get as members of our church.

I may also start getting a local metropolitan magazine for our area because I pick it up at the grocery store every couple months and the sub would be much cheaper.

I read Mothering sometimes, but haven't subbed yet. We read a lot of stuff online here.

All my subscriptions are free. I don't even think I can remember them all:

Macworld
Old House Journal
Southern Living
Parenting (hate this one)
Women's Day
Psychology Today
Photography (don't remember the actual title of it)
Soap Digest

UU World
