Made my very first fondant cake....ANOTHER CAKE POST #52 - Page 3

Thanks for the links! I am going to have to try that. I have four birthdays coming up in the next two months, so plenty of time for practice!

I was very indimidated by fondant the first time I tried making/using it, but in my opinion it's so much easier to work with than buttercream, simply because it has a much smoother finish. I made my girls a two tier topsy turvy cake covered in green fondant with purple circles and a Tinkerbell made of melted chocolate for their birthday party last month. I saw all the flaws of course, but everyone was really impressed. Even my grandmother told me I should make cakes for a living! lol

That is so cool. It came out great!

I love to bake but find the thought of fondant intimidating.

Nice job!! I too just made my first fondant cake yesterday for my cousins 17th birthday. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the marshmallow fondant was to make and work with. I am psyched to try it again with more fancy designs! I think I may have screwed myself though. My family was so impressed that I think I have upped the birthday cake bar and may be expected to produce more cakes like that.

You mean good tasting fondant isn't vegetarian? Ah well, I could stand to eat less cake.

Your cake is gorgeous!

It is appropriate for a vegetarian....but not a vegan. Am I wrong? Crisco is made out of vegetable oils here in Canada, marshmallows I understand that, but as far as I knew MOST vegetarians eat marshmallows but not vegans.

I made my son a birthday cake. It's my 2nd fondant cake. The bottom layer is a tye dye cake. So the actual cake is tye dye, and then I had intended for the fondant to be tye dyed, but it didn't quite work out how I wanted it to. Second and third layer are just chocolate cake with buttercream frosting.

Wow, that could just about pass as a professional job!

ETA: Just saw your sons cake... forget the "just about"... you could absolutely be selling your cakes.

Those look awesome! I love making my kids' cakes, you've inspired me to give fondant a try.

What a fun thread! I also love making cakes. It's a relatively new hobby, and a lot of fun. Usually I make marshmallow fondant. Lately I've been making cupcakes more often and experimenting with different flavors and recipes for cake.

Here's an album of some of my cakes. http://picasaweb.google.com/aprilkar...eat=directlink

OP: Your cakes look great!
