Baked goods that ship well/care pkgs

Sorry didnt know where to post. I am going to be making up a monthly "care pkg" for my neice and nephew who live in another state. While they visited us over the summer (their parents are going thru a horrible divorce) one of the special things we did was bake...I was taken aback that my 15 and 11 yr old neice/nephew had never baked anything in their life..no cookies nothing, not even the slice and bake kind. But then again my sister is the "homely" type so it dosent suprise me.

Anyway, I was planning on sending a priority mail box (to insure freshness) of baked goods. Any suggestions? I would like to send more than just cookies every month although they would love that. They live in the desert so half the yr would have to be non melting sweets. I am also including little letters of encouragement and trinkets corresponding to things like holidays/seasons but wanted to add something they could enjoy eating as well since they kept saying that baking (which we do alot of around here) was the best ever. I not a candy maker, I tried once and it was horrible. Recipes would be appreciated. TIA

My favorite one to receive in college was Whoopie Pies. You can do pumpkin whoopie pies too. Snickerdoodles usually held up pretty well too. You could also do GORP in a festive container (either raisins and peanuts, or extra things like coconut flakes, chocolate chips, granola pieces, etc.)

I would stick to items that don't go stale quickly, because of the shipping and since they'll get a bunch of it at once it may not all get eaten right away. So I guess that would rule out yeast-based recipes, since I find those are best fresh.

How about something like a zucchini loaf? Or carrot cake? I find the shredded veggies in those help keep them moist longer.

You could send those "gift in a jar" type gifts (ingredients w/ a recipe type thing). You could include along with it a sample or something useful like measuring cups, cookie cutters or potholders.. Then they could have fun baking themselves!

I ship rice krispie treats to Iraq often, and they hold up great!

Good old, chocolate chip cookies usually ship pretty well. My Mom used to send them to me up at camp... she put them in an old Christmas cookie tin lined with waxed paper and they did fine.

The Magic Layer Bars/7-Layer Bars ship well... actually, any bar cookie, in general.

Macaroons ship well.

A few of my cookbooks actually mention which Christmas cookies are good for shipping...which are good for freezing...etc.

OK... I found this for you... 5 best cookies for mailing
