Zoloft & breastfeeding

Note: I'm not pregnant yet, but we are TTC so I'm just thinking ahead

I take Zoloft for anxiety, and I know some are against medications this is an absolute must for me. When I'm pregnant my hormones balance out quite nicely and I do fine, but when I had DD within two weeks of giving birth I was a nut job, seriously. Crying, anxious, hysterical etc and it was awful. I breast fed her and didn't go on my medicine and for the first few months of her life I was a good mom yes, but not a happy one.

So now that we are TTC I'm nervous. I can't handle being like that again, and I know that breast feeding ON Zoloft would be bad for obvious reasons

Does anyone have any advice?

Check out the PPD forum. There are a lot of ladies there who are on or have taken Zoloft.

Zoloft is safe for breastfeeding. In fact, I think it is the safest you can take. I am currently taking 100 mg a day and nursing. I have been on it since December when DS was 9 months old.

Lots of women also keep taking it while pregnant. My dr. told me that a depressed mom is more harmful to her developing fetus that a small amount of Zoloft. (She was referring hormones or something in the blood during depression, sorry I can't be more specific.)

Either way, I say talk to your doctor and decide what is best for you.

My pediatrician this week told me I can take Zoloft safely while breastfeeding. She says many mother's due to help out with the hormonal changes.

I've taken Zoloft through both pregnancies and nursing both children, with no observable side effects. I'm on 100mg. It is the antidepressant of choice for nursing mothers as very little of it transfers to the baby.

Zoloft is rated safest to take while nursing. It is found in virtually undetectable levels in breast milk. I took it after my dd from 3 months till a year old then switched to a new kind because of libido issues.

I would use it with caution in the third trimester though because it has been linked to suppressed breathing in a newborn if taken within 2 weeks of birth.

Thank you all SO MUCH

This makes me feel a lot better - I was seriously worried I would either A: be crazy or B: not be able to breastfeed because of the craziness
