Cast iron on a flat-top stove?

I have just rented a house and to my dismay the stove is the flat-top variety without burner rings. Has anybody had any luck using cast iron on one of these? In particular I'm wondering about the large two-sided grill that I use every Sunday morning for blueberry pancakes!

I don't have a grill but I use cast iron (skillets, wok, pots) on our flat top every day... works just fine

I worried about the same thing so I called our cooktop manufacturer, Kitchenaid. They were very nice and told me that cast iron is not a problem on the flat top surface. They did, however, warn me that if I shake the pan back and forth while it's on the burner it could scratch it. I'm not a 'shaker' so no problem there!

I also use a round cast iron grill pan, one that has total contact w/the burner and it is fine. I don't know about the reversible grill pan.... I don't think the bottom makes full contact as it sits on the burner? Maybe someone will have an experience w/that.

happy cooking!

It never even crossed my mind to worry about using my cast iron on our flat top stove. I've never had any problem with it.
