School Lunch Ideas?

For the first time in several years, I will have children attending public school. Since we keep kosher, my kids can't eat the lunches offered at the school cafeteria (which was an option at Jewish schools.)

I'm out of practice here- what can I pack my kids for lunch that they'll actually eat? Wait- let me rephrase that. I'm talking about a couple of teenagers here. What can THEY pack themselves for lunch that they'll enjoy eating? I still need to do the grocery shopping and suggest things for them to pack.

DD1 has already figured out that she wants to eat a salad for lunch every day, with cheese, chopped eggs, nuts, etc added for protein. She'll probably pack rice cakes and fruit to eat alongside the salad.

DD2 is a lot more picky. She's lactose intolerant but can handle cheese and rice pudding (but not plain milk, cereal and milk, etc.) She's willing to eat fish and meat (unlike her sister) but gets tired of the same thing for meals every single day.

We keep kosher, so we don't eat milk and meat together (fish with dairy is OK), shellfish, or pork.

get a thermos. this really expands your options.

left overs make great lunches. soup, speghetti, cassaroles...

there are always sandwhiches, but mix it up by using different breads. pitas, tortillas, crackers etc.

my kids pretty much get the same thing in their school lunches they would eat at home.
