Im really curious what others opinion is on soy milk? I hear good and bad that seem to contradict each other. The article below influenced my view of soy milk. But I was wondering if this view is accurate???

*please dont be offended that the article is from no greater joy. I dont believe in their teachings, but came across her article.

I stopped giving my family non-fermented soy after doing a considerable amount of research and I think we're better for it. Here's some info from the Weston A. Price Fdn.

No. I don't think it is especially if it's not fermented.

I would rather do no milk that soy milk.

I avoid most soy most of time--even the fermented stuff. But I definitely wouldn't do soy milk.

Then why do so many recipes call for soy milk?

Im wanting to build up my toddlers immune system and was looking at making him veggie and fruit milkshakes. The recipes for kids use soy milk, so I was thinking of using coconut milk instead.

This is the smoothie I was going to start out w/ this one today!

Coconut is a world better than soy!

The answer to why so many recipes call for soy milk (and so many people claim it healthy) is long, political, and financial!

just posted in the "tofu for toddler" thread, but I'll repeat: I inadvertently used soy (mostly soy milk) as birth control for all of college and beyond. When I gave up the soy cold turkey, my periods came back within weeks! Soy also caused digestive issues, and acne! I spent my teen years trying EVERYTHING to cure my acne, I was depressed and shy for years because of it! It was all related to the soy!! I will never let that happen to my kids!!!

Whole soy foods (edamame, tofu and soymilk made from organic, non-GMO soybeans) are one of my primary protein sources (along with peanut and hemp) and I can say definitively, they are good for me. Every health problem I had before converting to a vegan diet has cleared up, including the hormone imbalance issues, early signs of metabolic syndrome, and acne that had plagued me my entire adult life. I've also stabilized at a healthy weight, after battling obesity since age 8. I'm physically stronger as well, I can do pullups for the first time ever. Heck, even my cellulite is less evident. Oh yeah, I'm no spring chicken either, I'm pushing 40. I will never go back.

My husband and children also eat whole soy foods and none of them have any health issues. I've read a great deal of anti-soy...er...writing...and I find most of it heavy on assertion and light on evidence. The articles I've read that are based on real science generally have studied processed and/or GMO forms of soy. So I'm going to go with what my body is telling me, which is that soy is nourishing it well. Need more convincing? Do I look unhealthy?

I didn't read the article ... but after I eat products like soy milk or soy flour my thyroid gets thrown out of wack until I back off the soy ... then when, retested, it goes back to normal. I also feel "different" (probably because of the thyroid) while using it.

To me, the biggest issue with soy is the amount of estrogen in it. I would be especially careful with giving it to little girls. We stay away.

So do you use milk now?? Do you follow the traditional foods diet?
No, I don't believe it is good for you and my kids don't tolerate it- we get diarrhea- CRAZY sleeping- no naps- hard to get to sleep for bed- majorly cranky. It is a highly intolerant and allergenic food. I use small amounts of rice milk for some things but mostly use coconut milk if I make making something with any amount of milk sub.

Yes, we follow a TF diet.

We consume a lot of cow dairy, but mostly in fermented forms like kefir, yogurt, cheese, etc.

It is also weird that my son who is intolerant to cow's milk also can't tolerate soy at all so we do coconut milk or goats milk ... both of which seem ok.

Unfermented soy worries me. I do rice milk or almond milk or coconut milk instead.

Actually not really. Most people that are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy as well. Or intolerant.

why?

and why is goat's milk so much more easily digestible?

I'm severely lactose intolerant, so I was using soy milk as a milk replacement. I didn't eat much tofu or other soy beside the occasional edamame with sushi. Also, there is soy in just about every type of premade/processed food that you buy, so I was getting it there as well.

I could not get pregnant. When I did I miscarried, then we went on to try for another year. I finally gave up soy milk for other reasons and voila I was pregnant with my son. I had no knowledge of the dangers of soy then, but now I'm convinced my over consumption of soy was causing infertility in me.

I know that many Asians drink soy milk, but its more of an occasional health tonic. Plus the soymilk sold in stores is not the same as traditional Asian soymilk (a by product of tofu making) from what I understand.

Maybe some people do better with it than I did, but I have made a huge effort to cut out non fermented soy.

I'd rather my children drink soy than animal milk any day. Animal milk has severe health risks. (It is like fertilizer to cancer cells.)

We don't use milk as a beverage though after weaning so I've never had to face this issue.

The liquid byproduct of making tofu is much more similar to the whey left when making cheese.

I also regularly consume soymilk, tofu, edamame and tempeh and I am very healthy and athletic and have regular cycles.
