can prefolds be made over?

I come from the dark ages of cloth diapering -- my first is now almost 8 and back then prefolds with wraps was as exciting as it got. I'm pregnant with our 4th and not really wanting to invest a bunch of money but I will need some new wraps regardless and I was wondering if I can "convert" to these nifty shells with the inserts (see how out of it I am -- don't even know what they are called) but I've got all these prefolds and it seems wasteful to not use them. Anybody try making them into inserts? just wondering

I wouldn't waste the prefolds cutting/sewing them into inserts, they work just fine if you just fold them and insert them that way. Just use one size smaller than the diaper, like I have a medium fuzzibunz that I use a folded up regular size prefold in. If you want to use microfiber inserts, just pick up some microfiber towels at Target or the dollar store, and cut/sew those into inserts.

Diapers are a lot more advanced nowadays then they were even 5 years ago. Make sure you check out the links in the sticky here, there are a bunch of free patterns, for diapers/covers/etc.

I have made prefolds into inserts. Like cutting them into three, and then covering the middle with 2 pieces of flannel. Then, use the sides together and put flannel around them. I sew "quilt" down the middle, and then serge around the edges and round them off. Kymberli
