Optional C-Section or VBAC

Hey guys,

Hoping i can get some input on this-

I had an emergency C-Section with my daughter as i stopped dilating and up until this morning i had in my mind no doubt that i would have another c-section but i decided to read up on it and now i'm a little-well a lot worried about having one. I read a few things on VBAC'S and that too scarred me a little because i read stories of women's uterus rupturing.

Just don't know what to do/think and feeling a little nervous..................

Hello mama! And congrat's on your new pregancy!!::

My dd was a c-section after 48hrs of active labor and not dialating past 6cm. I had to mourn her birth. It was nothing I had hoped for. I knew the moment she was born, I would do whatever it took to have my next babe through my vagina. After 3 yrs of research and soul searching I am planning that for this babe. The only way I will agree to another c-section will be a true medical reason. There is just too much good that comes from a natural vag. birth, versus a repeat c-section. The risk for UR is the same as other complications that can arise from birth. But we don't all go running for a c-section.

I highly encourage you to check out ICAN http://www.ican-online.org/ and see if you have a local chapter in your area. Get support. Ask questions, talk to other vbac'ers and get educated. Read "Silent Knife"..read and read some more. Make informed choices.

I am now planning a home vbac. I have an amazing support system that believes in me and in my body to do what it was created to do. Go to the VBAC forum. Read vbac stories.

Good luck mama Search your heart and sould cause only you get to live with the end results, no matter what they are.

The decision is entirely up to you.

But, with regards to the UR (uterine rupture) the leading research on this, Dr. Landon, has put the UR rate for a VBAC at like .5-.7% (yes, less than 1%). I wont lie, it does happen and can be catastrophic, but the chances are relatively low. I am also going to second ICAN.

My fourth child was born by emergent c/s due to turning transverse while delivering. After doing the research, IMHO for me, any future children will be an attempted VBAC.

BTW, if you did not know, Michelle Duggar has had 3 c/s. Her first one was a while ago, and had several VBAC's after that child. I want to say she had another one a couple of years ago (like 2 or 3 children ago) and has had at least 1 or 2 VBA2C (that is VBAC after 2 c/s). Most of the ICAN community is waiting to find out if she tries for a VBA3C, since her last child was born via emergent c/s for being breach when she went into labor. Oh, and she has been using a hospital that allegedly has a ban on VBACs.

I would know your facts before approaching your OB, as if they are not really supportive they will try scare tactics to get you to do an ERC.

Popping over from Nov DDC to say that VBACs are almost always safer for mom and baby than a RCS. Come over to the VBAC forum for lots of good resources. https://www.mothering.com/discussion...splay.php?f=21

Only a quick sec to reply, but just wanted to say that I had an emerg c-section with my dd and then VBAC with my ds. It was one of the most healing events of my life. Truly amazing.

I 2nd the pp who suggested heading over to the VBAC forum for loads of info.

Good luck mama!

I disagree that *MOST* OB's will push for RCS. While I agree that some will, I think, if you have the right OB, s/he will value your opinion and needs/wants and help you do what is right for you.

I personally will have a C/S this time. I delivered 4 children vaginally, and with #5 my uterus started to rupture (Doc had never seen a uterus just before rupture) and I ended up with an ECS which saved both our lives. I will not attempt labor again, because the risk for rupture is greater since it happened once already.

On the other hand, when # 4 was born (still born at 38 weeks) I was all ready to birth without medication of any kind, but at the hospital because I wasn't aware there were other options. After she passed, I was so scared it would happen again my youngest DS's pregnancy and birth were followed constantly, several times a week even (at my request, and peace of mind). So where I am now, C/S no matter what, where I was then, I could have done anything!!! Good Luck mama!!
