Sleep Check In

Thread Starter
DD is nearly 6 weeks old and is still waking every 2-3 hours at night. She's 100% breastfed and has never been supplemented. We pretty much feed every 2 hours around the clock, sometimes 3.

Several people have said their babies are sleeping 5+ hour stretches at this age and I was actually kind of surprised. (I don't know if they were EBF or FF or what, if that matters.)

Just wondering how much your babies are sleeping these days and if they're settling into a pattern of day time waking and napping and then sleeping at night. Also, how often are you feeding day time vs. night time?

DS is 5 yrs old and I cannot remember when he started sleeping in longer stretches and when he settled into something of a schedule. (not imposed, self-created.)

My first did not sleep that long of a stretch until he was much older. I was lucky if I got 3 hour stretches until he was 6 months.

I am hoping this one will be different but he is only 2 weeks old. A few days I have gotten 3 1/2 hours. so that is already longer than with my oldest.

At night it could be that he is not really that hungry just comfort nursing and waking up because of that need. I know my oldest did that a lot especially at night.

No pattern here... The longest he sleep is 3 hours, and that is always durring the day (to my dismay). It is usually more like 1-2 hours, the same for his awake periods. Usually at night he has 2 hours of happy awake time followed by one hour of crying. The only cure is driving him around.

I honestly don't remember, we're also still on 2-3 hours, but I do know a lot of people who say their baby this tiny sleeps through the night or really long stretches are usually not 100% honest (or just forgetful). I think there are SOME babies who do that, but not most. Just my opinion.

My LO will be 7 weeks tomorrow. He is EBF. He nurses every 2-3 hours during the day. For the past week and a half we nurse about 9:30pm, put him in his straight jacket (swaddled), and put him in his crib (in our room). He usually wakes up at 2:46am(exactly) to nurse. So that is 5 hours. Then he goes 3 hours then 2 hours. Last night he went 6 hours (10:30 -4:30)! That was so exciting!!! FYI - I get him out of his crib before he ever lets out a cry. He grunts and grows a lot and I can tell when his just about to cry. I always wonder about people that say their LO sleeps throught the night if they let them cry or not.

ours is 4 wks old. during the day his naps range anywhere from 20-30 min to 3 hrs. he sometimes wakes for up to 2 hrs between naps -- more often he's awake for 30 or so minutes before napping again. at night his longest stretch has been just over 3 hours, but he usually doesn't wake me before 2. surprsingly, i have overactive letdown issues, so he doesn't always want to nurse back to sleep. that means i have to rock, hold, bounce him back down sometimes DURING THE NIGHT. so there. no pattern. no sense. no rest. just as i was expecting...

Yeah, are the babies really awake and they just don't know it. My LO is actually awake more than I know. I may wake up and find him wide awake not making a peep next to me just looking around in the dimly lit room. He does this quite alot. I just sleep and if he needs me, he will let me know. Does this sound like bad parenting to you? Would you sleep even if your baby were awake laying next to you? What am I supposed to do at 3 in the morning, get up and star gaze?

my ds was a 2-3 hr stretch kinda guy for atleast the first 2 yrs. Nearly EBF (child led food introduction, no FF) until 12 mo, and co slept. In that time frame I counted 3 nights when ds slept 7 hrs. That was it.

DD has a definate waking period around 1 am and we nurse/change diaper/nurse/change diaper/hicup/nurse/changediaper/on and on... But she seems to fall asleep around 7pm or 730 and sleeps all the way to that 1 am time. So for now there is this 5-6 hr stretch. She is able to get so much milk and wet and poo so many diapers I'm really not inclined to wake her except I may need to rethink it due to mastitis followed by plugged duct.

otherwise she sleeps 2-3 hours wakes to feed then back to sleep most mornings and days. There are random days she is obviously trying to stay up and hang out, she spent the better part of one day last week wide awake.

I know just how it is. The other day someone asked me if my baby has a scedule yet. Of couse not! Right when I think that we do, he changes on me. There seems to be some consistancies with a late morning nap. I can count on that. Everything else may change. I have to go day by day.

Nope, you're doing the right thing. If you wake up at night you'll set a pattern that it's okay to wake up and play. If you stay asleep eventually your baby will learn that this is quiet sleeping time.

dd sleeps 4-6 hour stretches at night...i do not wake her to feed her
she is 3 weeks old
I went to see Dr Newman for help breastfeeding and was told not to wake her to feed....
what a relief!
she never cries at night...i just wait until she looks like she will chew her hand off...
last night was a great sleep ...I got 6 hours straight!!

DS1 woke every hour. EB

So I thought something was wrong with DS2 when he sleeps for 6 hours through the night. Only waking to eat first thing in the morning and back to sleep. EB also. lol

hmmm ... I wonder why I am thinking about wanting another one already. This child is such a delight. Hopefully If we have another baby they will be just as good.

We've been getting loads of idiots asking if he is sleeping through the night... he isn't even a month old! It is getting hard to keep my cool and not blow a gasket. :

laughup No, you don't need to star gaze with your baby. They'll let you know when they need you.

My baby has done this, sort of. He isn't quiet about it, but he will be awake and want nothing but to just be awake. He is driving me crazy! I think he is up every hour or two and I'm going bonkers. The first week, he would nap wonderfully and sleep 4 or 5 hour stretches, going on his 3rd week, he is up all the time but sleeping horribly throughout the day. I think I need to let him sleep a little and when he is awake, have him be awake. His current plan is to nurse, go to sleep, then when I try to put him down, get mad and want to start the cycle all over again. I'm exhausted and he is doing the same thing at night. Although he isn't getting mad, he just breaths really loud and talks all night long. I need sleep!

Reid is usually waking every 2-3 hours at night to nurse. Last night he actually did a couple of stretches slightly over three hours and that felt like heaven! I'm hoping he'll keep that pattern up and then stretch it out longer but I'm not counting on it. DD was up every 1-2 hours for the first year.

ds2 is 4 wks now and sleeps in 2 to 3 hours chunks at night. Never more, sometimes less. The only real routine I see during the day so far is a good long, afternoon nap.

He's a good baby, very pleasant.

Nora's going 3-4 hours at night between feedings, occasionally longer. We're getting about 5-7 hours of sleep a night depending on her whims. She's pretty much formula fed, not my choice...my milk supply is lousy and my nipples stay stubbornly flat no matter what I do to them (pumping, shells...nothing works!). I can't breastfeed her, even with the shield because I don't produce enough to keep her interested. I'm pumping maybe an ounce a day if I'm lucky. :P But some is better than nothing!

We have a decent sleeper. I am working on a routine. He goes to sleep around 10:30-11 and wakes once, sometimes 2, but usually 3-4, then again around 7ish. Naps once in morning and once in afternoon.
