Free peaches!

I was dropping my mom off at her house, and her neighbor came up and asked if we wanted peaches. I said yes, she said grab a box and follow me. So I did.

She owns a house with a peach tree in back. House was rented by someone else, but he didn't want the peaches. So I have a good sized box of free peaches, instead of scouting the farmers market next week as planned. And they're GOOD. No idea what kind, but good flavor.

I was going to skin and slice and pack in syrup, but started thinking I'd use them better if individually frozen. In my supreme laziness, I've decided the easiest way to do so would be to cut them in half, remove the pit and freeze. I hate skinning them. The skin wouldn't hurt in a smoothie (and would add nutrients), and would slip off easily after thawing.

What would you expect from someone with 30+ whole tomatoes in her freezer?

Next up are the free Italian plums from my dad's trees. Those are all going to make jam for christmas presents.

lucky, lucky! I wouldn't skin them, either. I like the little bits of color peach skin adds when you make a smoothie with them.

If you have any left, have you thought of drying them? 10 pounds of dried peach slices lasted less than a week here when I made them last year.

The thing about drying them is, it takes a ton of work, a long time to dry, and they get eaten within a day.

I have 6 gallon size freezer bags full of them in my mom and dad's freezer. Plus a 4 cup bowl of sliced and peeled peaches, also frozen. I'll probaby make those into cobbler or a crisp.

Drying them is a PITA, but they are so good.

I made a peach-honey jam this year(my first jam) and it is excellent. I used Pomona pectin's low sugar recipe and the jam is delicious.

They do get eaten WAY too fast, it's true, but I've never thought of them as more work than freezing. I just slice them into a bowl of lemon water, skins on, and toss them in the dehydrator...

Awesome that you have freezer space for them, though - that will be so nice to have for deserts!
