Gross and nasty dog poop cleaning question

Our fully housetrained dog was apparently not feeling well yesterday.

Here comes the nasty part. He had a seriously revolting poop on our carpeted stairs while we were gone. When we walked in the house we thought something had died, it was that bad.

Since it was runny and sitting in the carpet for many hours, it got in there good. DH cleaned it as well as he could with natures miracle. Now it smells like poop + natures miracle. That is a revolting combo, let me tell you. It isn't stained- just stinks to high heaven.

I am not sure what to do next. Sprinkle with baking soda? Go buy some kind of carpet cleaner and try it? Since it is on the stairs we can't really steam clean it.

Do you have a carpet cleaner you can use? I have had success with OxyClean and Shout (laundry stain remover) I would saturate the area then cleaned the mess with a carpet cleaner in between applications. Sometimes it takes several applications but it works.

Little Green Spot Cleaner from Bissel - works great for hard to reach areas. and what PP mentioned.

Poor pup. We've had "poopy puppy" before with our girl & it's never much fun.

Baking soda works wonder. I often find once it's dried (gross I know) it will scrape off & then can be scrubbed better.

If you can I would seriously recommend using a carpet steamer like a spot bot. Even though the poop is off the top layer of the carpet it very well (since it was runny) made its way thru the carpet to the padding . So you basically have poop liquid sitting directly under the carpet itself. I would throughly clean the area several times with the carpet steamer and plain tap water. The problem with a lot of store carpet cleaners is that they are highly fragranced (to hide odors) and end up leaving residue that attracts dirt and really makes it a mess to really clean the area effectively. After cleaning the area take the nature's miracle (the only product I have found that works ) and if you can find a syringe (some aminal feed stores sell them-depending on your jurisdictions laws) inject the liquid into the carpet padding . Allow the liquid to get to the padding itself. Saturate the area, remember it may take a few applications and saturations for the NM to work on all the area. If you can I would suggest pulling the carpet back in that area to speed drying an allowing it to "air out".

"Nature's Miracle" is the best I have used because it actually lifts up the pee and poop out of the carpet. It also does not leave stains.....It comes in a white plastic bottle and red writing on it. It is made from enzymes especially for pet evacuation issues (including vomit).

I can't imagine having a dog and carpet and not owning a steam cleaner. I had a full-sized one for years - it had an unholstery attachment that worked for stairs, and also for cleaning my car. It just seems like dogs are such dust mops anyway that if I didn;t own one I'd be renting every other month.

You can get a small hand steam cleaner for $30 or so... a good larger one is probably closer to $150 or $200. It will totally get up all the nastiness.
