When I was pregnant with #2, we informed my parents that we would be leaving the baby intact if it was a boy (we had a daughter). My parents flew off the handle completely and argued all the typical b.s.
I gave birth to our son 2 months ago and he's intact, of course. I know my parents don't agree with our decision, but they don't talk about it. It's become not a big deal at all...we simply disagree.
The other day my mom said, "I was talking to R (my childhood ped, my parent's neighbor and friend who they respect and like a lot) and told him about your home waterbirth, and that you didn't have Reid circ'ed. And he said 'Well, no, there's just no medical reason to do it!'"
I said, "SEE MAMA! NOW do you believe me?" (all said with much humor - we're extremely close). "You just HAD to hear it from a doctor, huh??"
She laughed and told me that she just didn't know - it was just the thing you did when she had my brother. But she said that yes, hearing it from a pediatrician she knows and respects has changed her mind on this.
YAY!
: It really made me feel so great! I'm proud of my mom for keeping an open mind and a closed mouth. LOL! She's the best mother and friend in the world, and although she did spout off a lot at first mention of keeping a son intact she just let it go. She was nervous about our home waterbirth as well but supported us through it. I just love that all of a sudden I can tell her about how to take care of his penis during diaper changes/tubs (LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! haha) and she has an open mind that this is the NORMAL way for a baby to look.
