putting BM in ice trays?

I had to take a required breastfeeding class through the county since I receive state insurance for my pregnancy. I hate this class. I had to take only 3 of them but they drag on and on and I feel like I can get more info here on these boards or a BFing book than I do at the class.

Anyway, today they said we can pour BM in to an old type of ice tray and pop out cubes and thaw them when we feed baby. Has anyone ever heard of doing this? It was my first time hearing it. I'm a little leary of that. It seems like the BM should be in something where it's enclosed.

Once its frozen you can trasfer the cube into a ziploc bag and take them out as you need them. Its pretty handy actually. One cube is approx. one ounce.

Yes, I have heard this recommended by many mums, and I may have done it myself (can't remember now!). The only thing is, I have never read it recommended by a "professional" source (e.g. IBCLC, LLL etc) and so I'm a bit leary of suggesting it to other people. If anyone has a link to verify its safety I would *love* it as it's just so handy to do and beats spending a fortune on bags or other containers .

Sure, you can freeze that way, and then transfer into a Ziploc bag.

When I was still BF'ing, I made mama milk-sicles for DD this way to help her with teething.

I did it lots. The only downside was that cubes, once in a ziplock, take up a lot more room in the freezer than little baggies. Also, if the bags get shifted around a bit in the freezer, parts of the milk would sometimes flake off the cubes and into the bag, but you could still use it to make BM slushies.
