I have a very dear friend. We haven't been close lately but his wife recently had a baby. I had asked him about bf a bit on IM and he let me know she had a mastectomy when she was about 16. I am really glad I asked. I would have felt awful if I found out about that after buying BF items.
I agree with this. I really think it's important to realize that breastfeeding items for someone who plans to formula feed or cannot breastfeed often come across as passive-aggressive pushiness, no matter how good one's intentions are. Worst case, you could really hurt and upset someone. That's why I think it would be wise to try to figure out whether she plans to breastfeed before purchasing a gift that is BF-centric (like "So That's What They're For). Obviously the Dr. Sears book is ok even if you don't know, because it covers a heck of a lot more than just BF.

This. I loved and still love my six year old copy.

This is so sad, yet it is also a very good point.

True. I went back to work after 4 weeks (and just after a week with my second two ), so I registered for bottles because I knew I would have to start pumping right away. But I also registered for no pumping equipment or accessories. I wanted to buy those myself.

I like to get the Dr. Sears Baby Book for people because is introduces all sorts of AP practices, and it has helpful info to help sort out many of those little "oh-no-do-I-call-the-doctor" situations.

i registered for all the bottle stuff and a bobby pillow with my first pregnancy. i was definitely planning on breast feeding but assumed that when i went back to work i would pump and use bottles. i ended up never going back to work and have never once used a bottle. my point is- new moms can plan but often dont have a good idea as to what they'll actually use. so you cant really go by the registry. we also bought a pottery barn crib full price and never used it one day bc we chose to bedshare once we met our little DD =). live and learn! lol. this isnt directly related to breastfeeding but one thing i wish i had gotten as a gift was a sling. i didnt know how to pick one and didnt want to "waste" money trying to get the right one so i ended up with a bjorn that i hardly used. an inexpensive one like hotsling or moby wrap can also be used while breastfeeding which you could point out verbally or in your card (hint hint ). and it might be something she wouldnt otherwise get.

true, but there are some things that do mean FF, if you register for those formula containers, the ones with the compartments and the little spout. My SIL and I were preggo at the same time, and while both our lists had bottles and brushes, she had those formula containers and knew she planned on FFing.
