Thank you mama's for all the info! Now I think I have an idea of what I want..I'm leaning towards fitted and prefolds. I was thinking of having a stash of both! I want to do the wool covers and my mom has offered to knit them for me! Now I just hope she will do it. She is known for starting a project and not finishing it.

I for sure want the Kissaluv Os for the newborn stage. Great reviews and they look wonderful!!

Any suggestions for covers just in case my mom doesn't come through? Any kind, not too expensive.

And how many dipes do I need for each stage?

i just got my first pieces of newborn wool this week and i am melting!!

mwright, you need the most dipes for the newborn stage imo. we had 24 kl0s and 18 one-size fitteds for after the newborn stage and that worked great.

with wren we used bummi super whisper wraps with the kl0s because we hadn't gotten into wool yet. i had no complaints with those and thought they were great. hth!

I have a serious CD addiction I have bought/sold/tried so many different diapers. I really like prefolds for newborns but I hated our fitteds. KLO's didn't work for us because DD had such chubby thighs. I will be using our prefolds with my bummi's and thirsties covers and my xs fuzzi bunz pockets. I might buy a few AIO's also.

Oh..the cloth diapering world is a wonderful and addicting place!

I agree with many here about prefolds and covers. We have used this system (versus the AIO or fitted) with DD for 2 and a half years. Only once has she really had a rash...it was minor...and went away quickly with some fresh air and some pure lanolin. I am so passionate about CD for so many reasons, but for one it is soooo much better for your child...it kills me to think of all those chemicals against baby's sensitive skin.

We use Indian prefolds (unbleached cotton) in a 4:8:4 ratio of thickness. These numbers refer to the number of cotton layers that are shown together (4 layers on the outsides and 8 layers in the middle). You can get them in 4:6:4, 2:4:2, etc. A less absorbant prefold would probably be fine for a newborn, as they tend to pee a lot and not in great quantities. Then as your baby moves up in sizes, you may want to get them in thicker layers.

For covers, we use proraps, bummis, wool ones from Imse Vimse, and wool ones that I knitted myself. Wool is incredible and well worth checking out.

Every child comes with a different shape, and so not all diapers will work for your child. Some may leak a lot, while others will seem perfect. At first, I would just get what appeals to you or what someone passes down to you. Then, go from there.

I don't like AIO diapers as much, because they are more expensive and I think they require more laundering. Yes...they are fluffy and cute...but I'm really not sure they're worth it. With prefolds and covers, you don't really have to wash the cover every time, but with AIO or fitted...you don't have a choice. Everything goes in the washer, every time.

Prefolds and covers always just seemed more simple to me. I like the functionality of them, and in 2 and a half years, I have always managed to clean the diapers fast enough that we have NEVER had to use a natural disposable out of desperation. The other mamas I know that use AIO, almost always carry disposables with them too. The laundering can just be too much when you are busy.

Washing cloth diapers is a whole other topic, and if you are interested...you should start a new topic about that.

I buy my prefolds and covers at clothdiaper.com, greenmountaindiapers.com, and from a little cloth diapering store we have around here.

I think I'm gonna try some flats this time around, for something new. I just never bothered to learn how to fold them up!

Good luck and have fun!

We're planning to use the diaper service! I used cloth with my dd, but not until she was older. I didn't have an issue with washing/drying, but I'm one of those wash/dry/leave in the dryer people. This drives my DP insane. I've tried to improve, but well...

Anyway, I can't see adding to the agitation surrounding the laundry (which I already know is going to increase with the baby!) by adding diapers into the mix.

So- we're having someone else do the laundry for us! Lol! I think this means that it'll be pre-folds and Bummis wraps, which is fine. I didn't use Snappis with my dd, but will likely need to with a wiggly NB/toddler, so that will be interesting.

I also knit and made a bunch of longies and soakers for my SIL, which I'm sure she'll return so I can use them too. And I'm sure I'll make more!

my faves are Under the Nile fitteds and wool. I like fitteds because then I don't have to wash the wool hardly ever for being soiled in poo. I use aristocrats and some handknitted, and some sewn from old wool sweaters.

i don't have any experience with AIOs but fitteds work like prefolds in that you don't have to wash the cover every time. and i find our fitteds so bulletproof that i have never had a blowout and have never had to wash poo out of wool, which i am glad about! we have used fitteds for the 22 months wren has been around and she's never been in a sposie either! we have never even owned a pack of disposable diapers, and we've traveled all across the country at this point.

it's so funny because on mdc all of my friends swear by prefolds and irl all my friends who used prefolds gave up diapering because they hated pfs so much. it's such a strange divide and i have no idea what it's about. personally we wanted to make things as easy and goofproof as possible, so we went with fitteds instead of prefolds, but i totally agree that if you can get the folding down and are comfortable with prefolds they cannot be beat in terms of cost!

I started ds in cloth when he was 6 months old, so I'm having a ton of fun buying up newborn dipes at my local consignment store! I prefer prefolds and covers for bigger babies, but I think I want some fitteds and AIO for tiny newborns as well - seems like prefolds are just too bulky for them? Any thoughts on that?
Although honestly, I decided that for the first 2 months I'm doing a diaper service.

My BFF called me this afternoon to tell me about the cotton babies company's new bumgenius lines coming out in October...

econobum

and

flip

I'm so excited! This seems so easy to do. I have a really hard time buying anything on the internet. I really need to feel what I'm buying, you know? I wish Nashville had cloth diaper store I could visit.

Do you have a real store you can visit where you live?

I have absolutely nothing useful to contribute, but I want to follow along.

I didn't get cloth for ds until he was 2-ish, so I've never used cloth for a baby before. Should be a learning experience. I loved FBs in particular for ds, but to build up a full stash, we'll probably have to keep costs lower and do lots of prefolds.

It is a very strange divide. Those who seem to like prefolds don't do much but dabble in AIO and fitteds...and vice versa. I guess it's all what you're most comfortable with. And I think that if someone gives up on cloth diapering along the way, that person would probably have given up on it no matter what kind they used.

I'm just so happy that there are so many new mamas here that are interested in CD!!

Moved from I'm Pregnant to Cloth Diapering.

So I saw at my local consignment shop that they had thirsties covers for $5-8 a piece. She also had 16 newborn size cricket diapers.

Anyone have any thoughts???

Thanks!

I always wonder if people who say they gave up CD because of prefolds were using real quiality ones or the gerbers....
FOr me I'm doing prefolds and wraps for the NB stage even a slow to grow NB wont be in this stage long and itty bitty ones go through a ton of diapers so I can't rally justify a bunch of fancy fitted and I'm not a big AIO fan.
After that I'll splurge a bit and go for a stash of MEOS and sandy diapers which are fitted and snap on but will also be one size basically so they will last possibly the entire CD time.
