weighing the baby? - Page 2

if you have a home scale you can just weight yourself (after birth obviously) and then weight yourself holding baby. - yours and there ya go.

They were $15 at the Target here, but that was a few weeks ago at least.

I bought my scale on Amazon, it's the Salter digital baby scale. It was $60 but I applied for the card and so it was only $30. We use it all.the.time. I thought it was a wonderful investment, because I LOVE baby/child statistics, but it's also perfect for shipping packages.

But, pumping before baby arrives, and getting your milk in before baby has a chance to nurse will eliminate the colostrum that is so benefical to the baby. I would not do that just for that reason. I think my baby needs the colostrum, that is why we have it.

I don't think pumping would help much anyway, but thanks for the encouragement Both my kids were tongue-tied. DD had a level 2 anterior tongue tie and nursed FEROCIOUSLY, but with little effect Within hours, she wasn't even latching at all.... Lost weight rapidly, started pumping and the bottle... Eventually got her latching, but never seemed even a bit satisfied. Gave up and pumped for her... Should have seen the LC, who could have diagnosed it in 5 minutes, but I didn't know that till after DS. He had a level 4 posterior tongue tie and appeared fine until about 2 weeks... before that, he seemed lazy about it, but was gaining appropriately. After that, he started losing weight quickly too. Typical in posterior TT babies, from what i've read. Called the LC, who diagnosed it right away, got me in to see a specialist, and had his tongue tie clipped within the week. Within minutes, he was nursing effectively, and still is, 22 months later. So i don't think there's much preparation I can do.. I haven't had supply problems or anything, and my mild flat nipple problem has been corrected by my frequently nursing toddler We'll just have to wait and see if this baby is tongue-tied too... But i feel so much more prepared to handle it and get treatment RIGHT away, so that's great. I just want to make sure we're monitoring weight very closely the first few weeks, because the difference between normal weight loss and excessive could be as little as a couple ounces... kwim?

Ugh! I know how TT can affect the nursing relationship. My sons were TT and my second one I could not get in to get it clipped for about two weeks. So he ended up diagnosed with FTT, lost an entire pound in three weeks, and took forever to get him back to where he needed to be.

At least now I know what to do and how to fix it!

I am laughing so much about going to the post office, but I may have to do that myself! I don't have the money for a baby scale and my personal scale only goes in like 4 oz increments (it gives you 150.2, 150.4,150.6,150.8, then 151) Which is precise enough for an adult, but not a baby.

Is it awful that part of the reason I really want a scale is for bragging rights? DS was 9lbs 1oz and I think this LO will be bigger. I kind love telling people about my all natural birth and then telling them how much they weighed.

we weighed winter on the bulk food scale at the local health food store on her second day. We had ordered one of those $50 scales online, however we didn't test it first and when the time came it told me my baby weight 11lbs. We then weighed a 5lb. bag of sugar and it was seriously off on that too. That's how we wound up at the health food store. If you buy one of the cheap scales, I recommend testing it first

On ebay you can get a baby scale accurate to the 1/2oz for around $50, that is what we use.

You can also take your baby to a grocery store/food supply and weigh him/her on the scale near the potatoes.

I can only imagine the looks you would get! lol.

Anyway, we ended up going out and getting the $20 fishing scale from Walmart... great deal, and super accurate. we've been weighing things all night, and everything is coming up exactly right, to the ounce! Perfect for us, thanks for the tips, everyone!
