Is it nice though, or just kind of cheap and flimsy? I ask because when I had my flannel-lined skirt lightbulb moment and went googling I happened on a message board where women were talking about using it to make slips, with the satin-side out to prevent the whole tendency of flannel to stick.

(They were also talking about quilted petticoats, to get back to the "how to keep warm" actual point of the thread.)

Just want to stick my nose in here. I have usually found beautiful fall-colors of heavy, pretty (floral?) flannel in browns and reds at JoAnns in Sept. and Oct. I usually read your threads b/c they are fun and fascinating--I'm drooling over a sweater cardigan thingy on the Spiegel's website--fun longer layering piece ... can't afford it.

No idea - I never noticed it in the store. I'll have to check next time I'm there. I'd assume it wouldn't be flimsy because of the satin backing. Satin tends to be pretty tightly woven.

I definitely like the petticoats - I have two, in different lengths, that I like layering with. Honestly, my winter wardrobe is the BEST. I haven't really found summer stuff I love yet.

Who, mine? You couldn't have been talking to me. I just ask questions and act all confused and stick my foot in the mouth (as has been discussed in another thread at length tonight)!

For me (in this climate (the east bay of the SF bay area), very temperate), summer clothes are easy (but then I have no problem with a tank top on the few 100 degree days, and very little clothing at home) A loose light cotton skirt, a loose shirt and I'm set.

Quilted petticoats sound like a good idea. Do you hand quilt them or buy the prequilted fabric?

Since your going to be shopping online have you seen the Denim and Co. line from QVC. Depending on your take of "modest" length they have a few longer skirts. They have several heavier weight fabrics like denim, corduroy and usually have a variety of colors if you find a particular fit you like. I have bought a few pieces from them and im happy with the material and workmanship plus if I dont like it have 30 days to return it even if its worn!

I think its only a "problem" if you see it is. In fact some more "modern" modest dresser in the middle east do just that. We were speaking with a couple who travels to the middle east often and how it was interesting to see the two of them mesh, what we westerners would see as "modern" and how they mix both modern/modest into their clothing. For example they were telling us how in one very fashion forward part you could see younger women wearing high end jeans under there longer tunics. Our friend knew what kind of jeans they were wearing simply by the cut and styling/embellishment at the lower portion of the leg
