Black Bean Brownies?

Has anyone made the black bean brownie recipe emailed by Mothering? I'm thinking of giving it a try but wanted to know what it tastes like (...and whether it would fly below dh's and dd1's radar as a bean item...) TIA

haven't tried the mothering recipe but another all bean chocolate cake recipe that totally rocked- if you search you will see tons of threads about bean cakes/brownies and it seems that everyone likes them- you really cannot taste the beans.

I've had lentil brownies and they were good.

Can't wait to try those!

I haven't made the Mothering recipe, but I've made plenty of black bean brownies! It's the only kind I make when making chocolate ones. MMMMMM!

We are about to leave for vacation. Those would be awesome in the car. Thanks for the reminder!

I don't have the Mothering recipe, but I had brownies once that were made with a mix and a can of white beans only (no egg or oil, etc). They were good! What's in the Mothering recipe?

4 oz. unsweetened baking chocolate
1/2 cup butter or coconut oil
4 eggs
3/4 cup maple syrup
2 cups or 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, pureed
2 1/2 tablespoons instant grain coffee substitute (like Cafix or Inka)
1 cup chopped pecans, walnuts, almonds or other nut.

Preheat oven to 350C. Oil or butter an 8-inch baking pan. Melt chocolate and butter or oil together in small saucepan. In mixing bowl, beat eggs and maple syrup together. Add melted chocolate mixture and beat well. Beat in bean puree and coffee substitute. Fold in nuts. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until set. If you press your finger in the middle, it should make a little dent. Don't overbake. Cool Cut into 2-inch squares.

Yield: 16

They're gluten free, so we're halfway there! I wonder if the eggs could be substituted with something non eggy?

I haven't made the black bean brownies, but I have made these for my celiac nephew, and EVERYone loved them. the beans make them very fudgy

1 ½ Cups Chocolate Chips
4 Eggs
15 oz. Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans), drained and rinsed
1/2 Cup sugar (or sweetener of your choice)
½ Tsp Baking Powder
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt chocolate chips by heating water in a small pan, placing chips in a metal bowl (or smaller pan) and stacking bowl over the boiling water. Stir until melted. Blend eggs and chickpeas in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add melted chocolate, sweetener and baking powder and blend until smooth. Pour batter into a lightly oiled baking pan (8"x8" was used in the picture) and bake for 35 to 40 minutes.

Seriously, people are freaked out when they realize there are chickpeas in them, but you really can't taste them. kids and adults really like them

I made them last night and thought they were great However, the kids would like them more if I cut back on the coffee.

check out desertpenguin's link- the recipe is egg free The do call for a bit of sorghum flour though- of course that is gluten free but no longer makes it grain free. I wonder if another nut flour would work??

I can't wait to try these! I won't tell the kids what's in them though

I've made the black bean brownie's from the recipe on Mothering and they turned out great both times. If I hadn't said anything, I don't think either my son or my co-workers would have known there were beans in them. I told them and everyone liked it anyway and I got eight requests for the recipe! I made them in the blender so I wouldn't have to puree the beans seperately.

i am going to try them!

I have never tried that recipe, but I frequently will buy a boxed mix and instead of the egg, oil and water required by the box, add in a can of rinsed pureed black beans. The kids love them and will even eat the raw batter (I can taste the beans in the batter, but not the baked brownies). We are DF and the 2 kids that don't contain dairy are Duncan Heines and Ghiradelli.

i did this last night! yummy!!! i was a little worried because the batter looked so thick so i added in the water and they turned out great for cake brownies! yum! and you could not even tell it had beans in it!

We made them last night, and told everyone they had beans in them. The texture was off... too fluffy and they were not sweet enough to pass as brownies. If I made again I would add chocolate chips right before baking, I think. The kids are generally pretty open minded, but did not like them. I was not too impressed. I will definitely keep trying bean based dessert recipes until I find the right one for our family. I love the idea.
