First Time Knitter Package?

I would love to try my hand at knitting something, but am utterly overwhelmed by all the patterns, videos, instructions, yarns, tools, etc., etc.

Is there a decent package I can purchase somewhere that has a pattern, instructions, yarn, needles, etc. all together? It needs to be easy, but not one of those kiddie packages, which are the only kind I've seen. I'd really like to be something useful, too, in the end...like a good quality potholder, trivet, wearable or such. I'd hate to try so hard and end up with some trinket that was just doomed for the trash.

If that doesn't exist, can someone kindly point me in the direction of where to start? I really am confused and don't have much time to research it.

Thanks, Mamas!! :

If you have a local yarn shop, head there! I learned to knit by walking blindly into my LYS and asking someone to teach me to knit. They helped me select yarn and needles and taught me the basics. From there on I learned everything from books and the internet.

Good luck to you! You'll be knitting in no time.

Personally, I started with a single pair of needles, a skein of kitchen cotton and the knittinghelp.com videos. All told the needles and skein cost me about $5, and the videos were free. I sat down and knitted a washcloth/dishcloth, just playing with the different combinations of knit and purl, stockinette and garter, ribs, etc. just to see what happened. Took me a couple days, but that's all it really took.

I still have to go to knittinghelp whenever I encounter an increase/decrease I haven't used before, but that takes 5 minutes and again, is free.

I found a great little kit at Walmart that I learned to knit from. It came with a book, some patterns, 2 sets of needles...everything but the yarn

No yarn stores near me, unfortunately. I'm in the boonies.

Thanks for the advice on www.knittinghelp.com That sounds like a neat site. Does Target do knitting supplies? I was in the city the other day and looked at Michael's, Jo-Ann, AND Hobby Lobby. I was completely perplexed by it all.

Any idea if any of the WAH-mamas or Etsy folks do some kit? I'll go check there now.

Right on! That's awesome!! Does that actually look easy to do? It looks pretty fancy.

I think it will be acheivable and will teach you all the basics. If you have a problem with a concept- then go on to knittinghelp.com. Otherwise follow blindly.
