Would you be alarmed if you read this?

So I'm on Facebook today and a long-time friend of mine posts something to the effect of, "Wow, _____ slept for 14 hours straight last night, maybe shots are a good thing," (she posted yesterday that her girls, ages 3 and 6 weeks, got their shots. She was talking about the 3 y/o).

This was followed by a few people chiming in about how that rocks etc. I was pretty alarmed. On the nvic.org website it lists extreme sleepiness as a possible vaccine reaction symptom. So I posted back to keep an eye on her because that might be an adverse reaction to the vaccine and left it at that. I don't really expect anyone to come back at me for it much less pay attention to it but I wanted to put it out there just in case.

What do you think? Would you have said something?

I would have said exactly what you said. You put it out there. It might not do any good, nothing may come of it... but at least it's out there.

poor baby!

my kids sleep 12, 13, and 14 hours respectively so I wouldn't be immediately alarmed, but if someone asked me for advice and told that story, I would probably do what you did and say just keep an eye out (which I would say even without reaction since vaccines can cause reactions, kwim?)

OMG I am so jealous lol! My 6 y/o will sleep that long sometimes but it doesn't really matter because my 2 y/o still wakes up every 3 hours.

So she posted back, "Oh it's not the baby, it's ___, she's just really tired." I knew that it was the toddler and not the baby.

It's great until next week when my oldest starts PreK-- but since I am driving her, we all have to be up to go. Oh man-- they are not going to be happy

Honestly, that would alarm me. If her kids normally sleep that long, fine, but if it's out of the ordinary, yes, that's a good possibility it could be reaction to the vaccinations. Whether it's a serious one and might cause damage would remain to be seen, but I also would have posted a word of caution.

I think the "maybe shots are a good thing" indicates that this isn't the norm for her child. Yes, I would be disturbed, but on 2 levels: first b/c the vax might be having an adverse reaction, but also the comment about it being a "good thing" that a drug makes one's kid sleep for the better part of a day. I know people make offhanded comments on FB all the time, but I don't think children's health is a matter to be taken lightly like that.

I think you were perfectly appropriate in making your comment.

Ditto! Mine have almost always slept that long.

Though, my now 3 year old did not sleep that well his first year of life and when he got his first DTaP at 6 mos he slept allllll day and night and I called the ped worried sick. She said it was "completely normal" and I was like...lady you're cracked! This is NOT normal for him. So I would be alarmed if this was just happening due to shots.

I would've posted the same thing you did and then left it at that.
