How did you Name your Homeschool?

Some people have really cute, great names for their homeschools. How did you come up with yours?

I know a name isn't necessary, but I like the idea of it. There are occasionally online forms etc where it would be nice to fill it in. And there's a "Homeschool Student ID Card" available through the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op, where you need to put your homeschool name. I'd like to get this card, and I understand how having a "real" name adds to the "officialness" of the card.

I know many families might simply use their family name and add "Academy" or something. But my kids have different last names from each other. A combination of the family's last names can be awkward... my SIL calls us the "Dullivans". Which is funny, but maybe not what I want on our ID cards LOL....

I like the idea of "such-and-such freeschool", rather than "homeschool" or something formal-sounding. But I have no idea what to do for the 'such-and-such'.

If you have a homeschool name, how did you think it up?

Ours is: The Da Vinci Academy for Young Learners. (or just The Da Vinci Academy)

Ds's grandma actually came up with it, I wanted something that was creative and artistic but also something that represented the sciences.... She's an artist by trade so *POOF* The Da Vinci Academy was born.

We are Red Mountain Academy - I took a very loose translation of dh's family name.

Oh, I can so completely sympathize (or empathize or basically, been there, done that).

we're "hidden creek homeschool". there is a creek hidden in my backyard
we used to be an academy, but i changed it last summer. now we're just a plain ol' homeschool. i suppose i'll change it to something more academic sounding down the road (when transcripts matter). currently, our name has no bearing

we are LEAD (LEADING EDUCATION AND DISCOVERY)

As you saw from my blog post today, my daughter and I thought up our homeschool name yesterday - "Fox Mountain Academy".

Chosen because I wanted it to sound "academic", and shows that we live on a mountain, and we like our foxes that visit us. We call our visiting foxes "foxy", but I don't think Foxy Mountain Academy sounds right, lol!

Hm. We love cats here. And my son is a budding cetacean marine biologist, love whales and dolphins. There's not much special about where our home is, though I guess our city is known for being in a river valley. My son is also a rock/blues guitarist-in-training, and my daughter is a teeny ballerina. We're green, hippie-leaning, wannabe-homesteaders who are also techno-geeks. How can I put that together lol...

River Valley Orca Academy?
Feline Arts School?
Rockin' in the Free School?
Marine Blue and Green Education Enterprises?

LOL...

I wanted something to do with exploration and discovery, but I also wanted it to sound academic, for transcripts later on. We came up Academy of Cognitive Discovery There were others that I liked, but it had to be 30 spaces or less (state rule)

DH wants us to be *School Mascot* Alternative Learning b/c we met in college

I'm trying to figure out something based on a passage in Jeremiah that speaks to being outsiders, yet concerned "for the good of the city" one dwells in... It fits better my sense of "why homeschool"

Oooh, I like "Cognitive Discovery", and also "Alternative Learning".

If we used DS's favourite book, we'd be the Warriors Academy, which isn't QUITE the tone I'm looking for.

When I asked him about ideas for a famous person to name after, like DaVinci, he came up with Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Stevie Ray Vaughn (blues guitarist)... and then when I hemmed and hawed, "Einstein". Einstein is actually quite appropriate, since he was reportedly a haphazard and unsuccessful student lol...

Hm. Alternative Academy for Academic Discovery. Institute for Free Alternative Learning. The Einstein Free School for Cognitive Blossoming. Heehee...

Oh- love that use of the slang!
We are naming our third son Ender (he's due tommorrow...)

So we do take names lightly - we left the public education system to allow learning to be more creative and fun - I think my sons name choice reflects that.

We have an umbrella school called The Farm School- so I guess thats our official name...

Our (long neglected) blog is Wayward Scholars. If we were to name our homeschool, I'd stick with that.

This thread made me think of this post, which I found really funny

We, too, are named after the brook in our backyard. I was kind of hoping that DS would be a girl, JUST so I could tack on "for girls" at the end, for just that tiny bit extra overabundance of dignity. I kind of like geographical names: a nearby landmark, or an old Indian name for the area, or something like that.
