puppp AFTER delivery?????

I just had my third c-section on August 23. It was my first baby boy, and he has a different dad than my first two girls. After the surgery, I had some itching that they said was from the anesthetic in the spinal. They gave me antihistamines and it dulled the itching a bit. I was released from the hospital and focused on the intense pain for a couple weeks, but noticed an itchy rash where the adhesive tape was holding the incision dressing on, and where my IVs and catheter wire were held by tape. I had an allergic reaction to the hospital tape with my first two pregnancies, so no surprise. It always just went away after the residual adhesive wore off.

THIS TIME, however, not so simple. The tape rash seems to have tapered and is almost gone, except for around the incision. And now that rash has spread southward down all the way to my vagina and on my inner thighs and a little on my butt even. I also have it in a band around my rib area, on the sides under my armpits and around my back. I was using Preparation H for awhile to help with some pregnancy hemorrhoids and I noticed the Prep H was making my butt itch like crazy, and it didn't itch when I didn't use it. And if I even think about putting deodorant on, the itching is insane. Also, freshly laundered clothing causes nearly immediate rash, though it doesn't matter what laundry detergent or even if the clothes are recently laundered at all (I'm resorting to wearing dirty clothes to try to stop this rash!!). As of today, the rash is now on the tops of my feet too. Red, puffy bumps that run together and make big patches. Looks just like the pics of P.U.P.P.P. that I Googled, except I didn't have that at all when I was pregnant! I am using calamine lotion right now, which is totally not working. I stopped taking my Vitamins to see if it would go away, but it has just gotten worse. I can only imagine where it will show up next! I need help! Anybody know if it's P.U.P.P.P. or how I can get rid of this?????? My postpartum check is not until the first week of October and I don't think I will still be sane by then!:

It sounds to me like an allergy of some sort . . . if it is, and maybe even if it isn't, taking benadryl might help (antihistimene). It is safe for breastfeeding - worst thing that will happen is baby might get a little drowsy - according to my LLL leader.

Unless you are allergic to oats, an oatmeal bath could also be soothing.

I would call this in or thry to get my appt moved up. I imagine this would really be affecting you bonding/mothering at this point and that is cause for concern too.

I'm so sorry you're suffering from extreme itching during your babymoon! If you feel it's making bonding or breastfeeding difficult, definitely consider getting to a dermatologist. In addition to drug treatments, I've read that sometimes UV-B (tanning bed) treatment can help, and a doctor can prescribe the right amount.

I had a bad case of PUPPP for the last few weeks of pregnancy and one of my biggest fears was that it wouldn't go away or would get worse after the birth. This does happen sometimes. (Luckily, it started to get better as soon as my water broke at the beginning of labor!)

This thread that I started has some suggestions for coping with or treating PUPPP. (Note: Make sure not to use any remedies that contain camphor--apparently it's not safe for babies.)

I'm really sorry you're suffering from itching. Although I've been through a lot of rough stuff in my bodily life, PUPPP was one of the worst things!

I got PUPPS within days of Lyra's birth. It started in my stretchmarks, and I initially assumed it was just the way stretchmarks are. As it got worse, raised bumps in my stretchmarks, and connecting them all over my belly, I realized it was PUPPS. 4 weeks out, I'm still itchy, but it's not quite as intense. I've been taking dandelion root since about day 9 and bathing with pinebark soap since about day 14. It did really spread to my thighs, and to a lesser degree my legs and butt.

Yours sounds worse than mine. Definitely worth a call to a doctor. It might be an allergic reaction instead of PUPPS.

Thanks for the suggestions! Interestingly, I thought of tanning via tanning bed earlier today, since it helped with acne I had years ago and seems to break down things in the skin. Apparently PUPPS can be caused from fetal DNA being retained in the mother's skin and is more common with boy babies (I just had my first boy). So strange. I had NO itching problems during the pregnancy at all.

I'm wondering if dandelion root is safe for breastfeeding. I found some at my health food store I shop at, but I'm not sure if it's okay for him to eat it via breastmilk. I actually haven't tried Benadryl yet (since we happened to be out of it), but I'll get some tonight. I'm just not entirely comfortable with how I react to Benadryl while cosleeping with the little man. Eek. Don't want to sleep too deeply and squish him! It should be okay though, since I was on Percocet and didn't have any problems with squishing him. Also, do I just take dandelion root caplets or is it better to buy it roasted or something?

I hope it's just an allergic reaction and not PUPP, but I can not think of one thing I could be having a reaction to, other than the medication in the spinal. But that itching should be gone by now, right? And I never had a reaction to the spinal before. Ugh. Just frustrating!

I don't feel like it's affecting our bonding, no. He's a breastfeeding champ (he gained a pound and a half in a week and a half!) and luckily, I was too focused on the pain of the incision to worry about the itching at first, until the pain got better and now it's just itchy rash to worry about. If I take prednisone, the itching gets a little better for a couple of hours. But I only have a few prednisone, leftover from an episode with Shingles last summer. So I'll be out of those soon. My doctor's office is absolutely not going to move my appointment up. They had such a hard time even booking me for the October checkup since they're "sooooo busy". Blah... whatever. I'll figure it out for myself, I suppose.

I feel pretty comfortable taking the dandelion: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/ref/h...html#dandelion.

I took Children's Benadryl just at night for about a week when it was most severe.

DDC crashing...I had horrible postpartum itching and what I thought were hives all over my body. What finally helped was rubbing witch hazel on the welts. It reduced the itching and helped get rid of the welts.

I was one of the lucky post partum PUPPS mamas too!

Grandpa's Pine Tar soap saved me.

Are you sure it's PUPPP? Have you taken any new medications?

Just seeing this now. I wanted to chime in that it is possible to get PUPPP after delivery. My OB said it is rare, but she sees it occasionally. I got it about 4-5 days after delivery with my son last time and it was horrible. Lasted about 10 days. I hope it is clearing up fast for you!
