Largely because of that, I'm thinking very seriously about grad school next year for public policy. It's a really affordable degree as those programs go and the salary on the other end is comfortable, not fabulously wealthy, but reasonable.

This makes me so sad (but I know it's true). Journalism and the newspaper business in particular are probably forever changed due to online trends, and electronic media.
It's a shame...blogs and social networking sites just aren't going to have the quality content and reliability (AND FACT CHECKING) of a real newspaper.
I love news, grammar, and writing, and my dream job was to be a journalist or an English teacher. In college, I thought about it but I went with a more employable and less freelance occupation. I always regretted that a little and hoped to someday go into journalism...now that seems very unlikely.
For me, I'm glad I chose the career I did because it's always allowed me to land jobs that paid at least a decent amount but it isn't my first love.
