Today Show Infuriating Homebirth Story

Thread Starter
Did anyone else see the today show story this morning on homebirth (which was alternately captioned "Extreme Birth" and...wait for it..."The Perils of Midwifery". It focused on one couple who had, tragically, lost a baby during a homebirth. Not to detract from how horrible that was for them, but I was just shocked at how they totally glossed over the fact that mortality rates aren't higher at home (actually, they did sneak in that statistic but it didn't seem to influence the overall tone of "if you do this, your kid will die and it'll be your fault").

I loved the jaw dropping statement "these women are choosing to give birth WITHOUT DOCTORS!!!" Like this is actually considered "extreme" in any country but the USA. Actually, that's just NORMAL everywhere else!

The closing sequence had the mom who had lost her child saying, "a c-section isn't the worst thing in the world"...of course, very true. But did they mention that the c-section rate has gone up over 15% in the last 20 years while infant mortality has remained the same?

Its just so upsetting how scare tactics and anecdote are replacing a reasoned discussion on this topic looking at the facts and studies like I understand they are having in Canada.

I just watched it online. talk about scare-tactic propaganda. They added just enough truth to make it scary, in my opinion.

UGH!!! What a piece of b.s. journalisim. I swear someone at the today show is in it with the American Academy of Obstetrics (or what ever they call themselves). Every few months they do a biased anti homebirth story.

Why can't they just report the facts?
I'm off to send them an email...

I just saw this video and immediately came here try and figure out where to put the link. It's horrifying that such negative mainstream attention would be given to the process of homebirth, exploiting this poor grieving mother to make it seem like all of us homebirthing mothers and their attending midwives are dangerous, irresponsible and placing our babies at death's doorstep by choosing the safe, natural route. They don't describe it as safe and natural, either; they call it a fad, and punctuate that by showcasing controversial celebrities who've had homebirths.

And no, it's not even the least bit surprising. When I saw the title, "The Perils of Midwifery," I thought to myself, do I want to watch this? It's going to p!ss me off, I know it. Nothing that comes from the Today Show about midwifery is going to be good.

They did in fact sneak the infant mortality statistic in there, along with a considerably shorter interview with a woman who had a successful homebirth, but they presented the statistic in a fashion so as to completely undermine the positive nature of the information. (paraphrasing) "Infant mortality is less per thousand births at home than in the hospital, BUT experts warn that could be misleading because of all the different types of births done in hospitals - multiples, breech, etc." They also added that accurate counts of homebirths are not kept in this country.

The doctors, of course, spoke as to the process of birth is best "managed" in the hospital. GRRR!! Managed. Whatever!!

I feel so bad for the mama who lost her precious baby girl during that birth. It was a cord accident, and could have been prevented with a section. But they may have missed it in the hospital too. It happens. I had an extremely long labor with my fifth, and because of that, there was frequent monitoring of the baby's heartbeat during contractions, to make sure there wasn't a cord issue like the one in the story. We were very close to transferring when she was finally born - and I am sorry for this family that they didn't transfer sooner. But this could happen to anyone, and you can lose your baby in the hospital too!! Why do people think that it cannot happen just because you are surrounded by doctors??!!?

I should stop. I'm ranting, and I don't want to be edited. (Sorry, mods, you guys are so awesome. )

Should pp's link to the Today Show be in activism, or is all this in the right place? Just beware of this video if you're not ready to get mad!

ETA: I just checked, and this video has been bumped off Today's main page, as well as MSNBC's. It was tagged as "NEW" just an hour ago. You can still find it but now you have to dig. I wonder if there's been a backlash?

I was just coming here to post this. My husband and I were both watching this with jaws dropped open.

I just sent them an email. I also posted the contact info on my facebook page in the hopes that others will write them.

I felt like I was watching a horror film. What a horrible of "reporting".
And I love how they basically trashed the reputation of the midwife. Grrrr.

Sorry! I posted a thread about this, too! My kids were going crazy, so it took me a while to write the whole thing.

I thought the whole thing was absolutely ridiculous. I wonder whether anyone watching would be like -- hmmmm. I wonder why it is on the rise among educated women? (that is what they say in the wacky segment. I laughed at the whole thing, but now DH keeps joking that I just want to be fancy and trendy, and that I will get a pedicure during labor. He is very silly like that.

On the other hand, I cringed because my sister wants a homebirth, and her DH is home recovering from surgery, prolly watching Today Show. And he thinks homebirth is a "risky" choice.

Outrageous

In June of this year, our son died during a home birth due to head entrapment during his breech birth. I feel like I am in a special position to comment on this..."journalism??".
I am as outraged as the rest of you. The language employed in this piece and radical use of emotion were so slanted against home birth and midwives it felt like an attack. Our stance has been that we defend our choice and our providers - because we did the research and we were prepared and that we canNOT know if there would have been a better outcome in the hospital. The odds were far in our favor for a good outcome for both Joel and me right there at home.
Those poor parents on the Today show were blaming...and that won't get you anywhere. The truth is that they did make a good choice, and perhaps mistakes were made, but mistakes are made in hospitals every single day - moms and babies die there too. This ridiculous piece made it look like home birth is a choice based on fad or indulgence, when in fact it is most often a choice made based on EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE. (sorry for the shouting, kinda furious). Any of us who have done it can tell you that an epidural in a hospital bed looks a heckuva lot more like a "spa" day than a natural birth at home. What a load of baloney.
Ok (steps off soapbox) thanks for letting me ramble on...I will gladly tell our story if it will help in any way against this kind of bunk. I honor our son and the memory of him by recognizing that we made the best possible choices based on the medicine.
Best to all,
SJ

I was outraged to. It seemed like a one sided story. I hate that they implied we do homebirths because it is "trendy".
SJ, I am very sorry for your loss.

I sent an email to them using the address you posted mommadoula2, Thanks!

Is there a link to it online? Haven't seen it yet.

edit found it.

and um...the first thing that struck me was like...why are two MEN sitting here talking about this to start the show.

K here is the thing that gets me. This couple had the ultimate decision to transfer. If they wanted to, they could have. Its like they put too much responsibility on the midwives.

ugh. I can't even comment any more. I'll just get really really pissy at all this fear mongering.
Oh my gosh. I can't believe what I just watched. ITA with everything that has already been posted. I think what really got me though was that bit at the end about "questions to ask your HB MW". One of the questions was "does the MW have malpractice insurance?" I guess that's important because if something happens to your baby, at least you'll get paid, right! How offensive and disgusting.
Hmm... who supported/paid for this show I wonder? Unethical journalism at its finest and EXACTLY the reason I don't bother with the News of TV in general.
SaraJS, you're so brave to tell your story. As I've said before, I so appreciate that you're willing to talk about the risks of HB. Any chance you'd share your story, however long or short, with NBC? (I'm not sure I'd have the courage to myself.)

I'm so very disappointed in the story. Three women I work with actually came to me at various points today and said "DID YOU SEE THE TODAY SHOW? YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS SEGMENT!" It bums me out that the only view mainstream media will present is so fear-based and one-sided.
DH and I were extremely disappointed in the story on the Today show. We're days away from our home birth and this is presented. Talk about being one sided and skewed. I was so irritated that it was such a dark picture of home birth and midwives when I know there's a much more positive side that what they showed. I've already emailed the show with my disappointment.

argh! i just found this through a link on the Citizens for Midwifery blog.

here's a link to the segment for anyone who hasn't seen it yet: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/261848...95933#32795933

this was absolutely DISGUSTING. i feel like the fact that the midwife was one featured in The Business of Being Born is a huge reason why they featured this story. almost like they were waiting for something to happen so they could pounce and discredit the film's message somehow.

so disgusting.

My favorite part is the very beginning in a gloomy voice: "A growing number of mothers are choosing to give birth with no drugs, no doctor, in the comfort of their own home."

That just sounds awful!
